I began volunteering with United Methodist Children's Home approximately 1.5 years ago and have not know a more dedicated group of people to the work they throw themselves into for the children and families they have to support. I've folded T-Shirts, done mailings, organized closets and packed offices and look to be promoted to teaching sewing soon :) That's how Jane Howland and I have joked about it. She is the best - when it comes to volunteer coordinators that I've ever known. This facility as been part of my life since I was a child and it was only recently that I became involved and it has been oh so gratifying to me. I've been allowed to see firsthand how they have been instrumental in the success of the folks they are helping. Doing what I can has also been a help to me as well. Thanks United Methodist Children's Home of North Georgia! Pia Jerome

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

Watching one kid in particular as he has gone through the program and now in college

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Be certain they had all the money they need - not because I could do better fundraisers but I want them to continue since they are so necessary.

What one change could this group make that would improve your volunteer experience?

They do not have the money for this but a mobile riding unit would make it so I could do more and probably bring in others.

Did your volunteer experience have an effect on you? (teaching you a new skill, or introducing new friends, etc.)

Oh my gosh, yes. New friends and just witnessing the fact that there are people - that most of us never realize are doing so much for those who have so little to help them get so much more. That we never know where we may find ourselves but knowing United Methodist Children's Home of North GA is there, I know whre I could go or where I could send others, if ever there was a need. They are like the angels without wings yet.

How did this volunteer experience make you feel?

Complete and green!

I've lived in Metro-Atlanta all my life and done a good deal of volunteering but outside the work that would be done for terminally ill children - this by far is the greatest organization that actually may be keeping children from "terminal". There can be no doubt that United Methodist Children's Home of the North GA are needed as an organization and truly doing the job with dedication, that makes me feel the same. The people working there have shown me that they are truly believing in what they do and the children and families get the very best they can work to get. They deserve more than a 5+. I am grateful that they are here to help! I've been able to work in various aspects of United Methodist Children's Home and been made to believe that what I do is the "best in the world" as the T-shirt folders or bag stuffer or organizer of closets.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

The Flea market and the children's opportunity to move into college even though they did not have the traditional home.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Give them more acres of land, buildings, staff and more employee appreciations

Jane Howland has done such a grand job - I can't think of a thing.

Did your volunteer experience have an effect on you? (teaching you a new skill, or introducing new friends, etc.)

Yes, I met people from across town that I may never have seen

How did this volunteer experience make you feel?

Sad, but true, selfishly fulfilled, thinking I had done some grand thing

It was my pleasure to visit the campus of the United Methodist Childrens Home in Decatur recently and see first hand some of the wonderful programs being provided to individual residents as well as family units. The personnel I met were trully dedicated to these young people. I am pleased to be a part of this organization.

I had the honor to create a new brand logo for the United Methodist Children's Home of the North Georgia Conference in 2011, and that process taught me a lot about this great nonprofit. Their simple mission—to bring healing, God's love, and the warmth of a "forever family" to kids and families in real need—truly resonates through the whole organization.

I began volunteering at UMCH in 2010, helping a 3rd grader with her reading and math homework. She had recently lost her mother and her family was having a difficult time. Working with her after school, we could both tell that she was making progress, and we were both thrilled when she was recognized as "most improved"! Since then, I've volunteered to help kids with reading in the Jesse's House after-school and summer programs. I have been very impressed by how well the staff and other volunteers know the children and their home situations - celebrating birthdays, comforting and encouraging the kids, and correcting very lovingly.

The United Methodist Children's Home is a fantastic organization. I have always known about the home, but thought of it more as and orphanage or group home for children. I learned that they are far more than that when Lil Jon won Celebrity Apprentice and donated his winnings to the Children's Home. I have helped wrap Christmas presents for the single mothers and their children who live on the property and for the young adults in the Independent Living program. I am volunteering at Jesse's House this summer which is a summer program for children who along with their parents are supported by this worthwhile organization. The Children's Home also supports foster children and trains those who will serve as foster parents. It is an honor and a privilege for me to volunteer at the UM Children's Home, and I hope you will endorse the United Methodist Children's Home!

I started helping with the Auxiliary flea markets in July 2009 and became a part of the auxiliary, most recently as recording secretary. I am impressed with how the home continuously updates its focus to fit the situation of its clients. With the State no longer sending children for congregant care, the home has shifted to foster care, young mothers assistance, emergency family housing, and independent living for youth who have aged out of the system.

I have had the opportunity to volunteer in various capacities at the UMCH. I have tutored students, helped serve luncheons, stuffed envelopes, assisted single mothers who live on campus with their children, helped with childcare, & read with children at Jesse's House. Each opportunity has allowed me to be of service to others & that makes me feel good. I have been richly blessed in my life, & my volunteering at the UMCH allows me to give back. I would encourage others to give of themselves too.

I am a new Children's Home Board member; and I recently went through the orientation session for the new members. While I have long been familiar with the mission and work of the Children's Home, I was greatly impressed and moved by the work currently being done there. The clear commitment to the lives of children and families served, the passionate determination to continue that work despite the ever-changing terrain of children's services in Georgia, including rapidly diminishing funds available for those services...and the demonstrated agility of Children's Home staff and leadership in navigating that ever-changing terrain all left me feeling energized and looking forward to joining the Children's Home team.

I believe United Chidren's Methodist Home is a wonderful opportunity for those who wish to volunteer by helping their fellow man. I am tutoring the English language to a wonderful young woman from Afghanistan, and already we have formed a good friendship. I am so impressed with the caring and attentiveness of the people who make United Chidren's what it is - a new home and opportunity for so many who are in need. It is only in giving to others that we grow ourselves. I would highly recommend volunteering in some program here at United Methodist Children's Home. We all have gifts to share with others so do it today!

I have been volunteering for years, the first time I volunteered UMCH selected a teen for me to mentor. When I met her for the first time I was surprised and thought they did not match us up so well. Because prior to the selection you fill out a lengthy questionnaire and was interviewed. However, my years with the young was a very good match and we built a good open communication and repoire.
