When i first moved to Tioga, I thought I died and went to heaven and I do believe we can rebuild Tioga back up so I can feel this way again. There was a 1973 article in The Philadelphia Magazine that called our community "a jungle" and it stated "if blighted North Philadelphia is to be rebuilt, they would have to do it themselves" and at first I was angry about it and then I decided we should use this article to inspire us to rebuild ourselves. All we need is a few more good partners and of course funding to continue our great work throughout the community.
Tioga United is a local nonprofit who for many years have volunteered to rebuild the Tioga Community with the love and dedication of themselves and the entire community. However, there were and still is stumbling blocks but with the help of devoted and committed board members and their faith we have been able to do some outstanding things, like host an annual festival for 13 years to promote unity in the community, rebuild our playground in one day with KaBoom and The Home Depot, rezone our neighborhood for the first time in 40 years, host monthly meetings to be proactive verses reactive, created a strategic plan to guide the future of our community growth and recently rehabbing six houses for homeownership. None of this would be possible if it wasn't for the prayers, the sincerity and the devotion of our board. I salute each and every past and current member of Tioga United and say to you Job Well Done, but we still have much more to do and can use funding and opportunities. If you can or would like to help, please calll 215-227-2858 and visit our web site at tiogaunited.org.
When I first moved to Tioga from West Philadelphia I thought it was North Philly. But my wife constantly reminded me that the section was Tioga. I am glad to be a part of the community and Tioga United because the fellowship, love and support shown by Tioga United to the community is outstanding. There is nothing as an organization, if they can, that they won't try to do to better the community and the residents.
Tioga United does great things for it senior community! Yearly senior proms organized well for the residence in the community!
Tioga United, Inc maintains a steadfast and effective positive presence in the community it serves. Whether it's economic development or providing affordable housing for community residents, there is a lot of "go" power with this organization.
The Tioga United Organization has helped to bebuild our community by relationships with our neighbors. It is now helping in planing and obtaining a new super market and valued stores to be bought to our community. This is one of the first big markets and new jobs for our community. There will be a mini mall for our community. They have hosed "Unity Day" for our community. Bringing our neigbors together for a fun day with a parade throughout the neighborhood. They also hosed a "Senior Prom" which they were host to many seniors in our community. The night was festive and the seniors enjoyed all the activities planned. They have purchased some vacant houses and rehabed them for low income families. They have many initives to help our community. They clean up vacant lots and vacant properties. They help at the Jerome Brown Playground with our "Friends and Family Day" and our afternoon school program for the children. This organization is an asset to our community. I am happy to volunteer my services whenever needed. This is one of the top ranked organization in Philadelphia. This organization has impacted our community in a positive manner. Juanita Zeigler Stevenson, President of the Jerome Brown Advisory Board and member of Tioga United.
Tioga United is an organizatoin which truly utilizes the concept of unity. The volunteers in this organization insist that nothing be done unless it has the approval of the people it serves. In fact, the very process of action begins with determining the desires of the constituency. Once, the community has been given a fair opportunity to be heard, action plans are designed that match the vision of the community at large. Tioga United makes certain to unite all resources at hand from the federal government to the local block captain to accoplish its goals. What makes TU such a special organiazation is that it is 100% volunteer. In other words, most of the work done by this organization is accomplished between the hours of 5 p.m. and 10 p.m. after its members leave their regular "paying" jobs.
Tioga United is an organization that provides so much to its community. It serves all members of its neighborhood by promoting a safe haven for those in need. From prostate cancer education for the young men, to home rehabs and development to "proms" for the senior citizens in its catchment it appeals across generations to create what is so sorely missing in the inner city neighborhood it services. TU is serviced tirelessly by its volunteers to create and maintain a sense of extended family and community to minimize the crime and fractious behaviors that plague underserved Philadelphia.
Tioga United, Inc. impacts the Tioga community in such a positive way. From improving housing to producing community events that benefit residents and their surroundings, Tioga United takes actions that are definitely needed to empower and rebuild a community that might languish if left to the devices of traditional help. "Each one, teach one" is one of the guiding principles of Tioga United. When residents are provided tools for rebuilding their community by Tioga United, they gain motivation and encouragement to strive further, thus setting an example for surrounding communities. Such effective community organizing spreads and rebuilds our families, our communities, our society, and our America. Kudos to Tioga United, Inc. for all their efforts in the community.
TU was established as a Community Organization because this neighborhood was in desperate need of such an organization, we have strived to better relationship with neighbors and the community and we would continue to do so in the future . TU has hosted unity day by requesting donations from different businesses so the community would not have to pay for anything, everything free. Unity day has helped to bond the community it was always a success. TU is in the process of renovating (6) houses for low income first time home buyers. TU has also help to start baseball for the youth, which the community did not have for a long time. TU also host Proms for our seniors which they really enjoy, we just hosted one in May already they are asking when will we have another one. So we strive to keep our community together. If you can be of any help please call 215-227-2858. Thank You in advance
