Mission: The orange bowl committee exists as an independent organization to support and produce activities and events that enhance the image, economy, and culture of south florida.
Programs: This past year, the committee hosted the discover orange bowl game and affiliated festival events promoting south florida tourism and attracting tens of thousands of visitors who fuel the local economy with millions of dollars. This translates into jobs and benefits local businesses, in line with our mission. Based on economic impact studies, it is estimated our 2013-14 bowl game and festival events generated nearly $100 million in economic impact and media added value for south florida. In addition to assigning television and title sponsorship rights to the bcs, approximately one-third of the committee's expenses ($6 million) were paid directly to the bcs and therefore benefits higher education through the continued on schedule oparticipating institution's conferences, while more than 35% went towards producing game and festival events.
for the past 16 years, the committee has financially supported local youth sports leagues, generating competition and funding an array of grants, donations and community programs to support this competition. The competition runs throughout the football season, culminating in both the ob youth cheerleading championships and ob youth football championships. In this fiscal year, the committee provided funding and hundreds of volunteer and staff hours to host championships, provided support for production of youth football segments on the inside the orange bowl television program as well as a feature program about the yfa championships, and participated in regular "park of the week" presentations to serve the more than 16,000 young football players and continued on schedule ocheerleaders annually who participate in the orange bowl youth football alliance.
the obc made a charitable contribution for the renovation of ives estates park; an existing city park located in one of the most underprivileged areas of miami-dade county. The committee entered into an agreement with miami-dade county to supervise and oversee on a turnkey basis the installation of new synthetic turf football and soccer field and a new scoreboard at ives estates park to be used for youth athletic competitions, as well as the community at large.
the committee provides scholarships to deserving college bound high school students. During the year, the committee funded scholarships for 22 individuals and made grants to scholarship funds for 9 organizations including 5 universities. Additionally, the committee supports organizations and events both in and outside of south florida on an annual basis, such as junior orange bowl, orange bowl international tennis championships, orange bowl international youth regatta, orange bowl health and wellness fair, orange bowl lacrosse classic, orange bowl impact and excellence awards, and orange bowl swim classic,benefitting numerous charities, funds and groups. The committee also is there in times of need, providing funding to those impacted by adverse circumstances such as a donation to the united way of central oklahoma for tornado relief.
