The nonprofit Corporation for Jefferson''s Poplar Forest was founded in 1983 to rescue and restore Jefferson''s plantation and octagonal retreat for the educational and cultural benefit of the public. Through tours, programs, and educational outreach efforts, the Corporation tells the story the private side of Thomas Jefferson, inspiring visitors to live lives of curiosity and creativity, as Jefferson did.
Poplar Forest is an ongoing restoration project open to the public for educational tours and events. Architectural restoration continues on the home's interior and wing of service rooms. Archaeology has uncovered evidence and insight into the plantation community that lived and worked at Poplar Forest as well as details about Jefferson?s personal landscape design. As a museum, Poplar Forest offers tours, events such as an Independence Day celebration and a conversation between Jefferson and a contemporary, and field schools in archaeology and restoration for both adults and young students. Poplar Forest also provides curriculum kits free of charge to schools, and an electronic field trip that features Jefferson in conversation with a contemporary.
