Organized in 1954 by parents of children with disabilities, Association for retarded Citizens, South Florida maintains a professional staff to fulfill a two-fold purpose: to ensure the human rights and welfare of all persons with mental retardation and developmental disabilities through effective advocacy, and to obtain or provide vital educational, therapeutic, and social services. The ultimate goal is to help individuals attain an improved quality of life by providing opportunities that will allow them live and work independently and make a contribution to their community. Arc, South Florida also promotes education, research, and community support.
