Address:

902 Constance Ln % Jacqueline Errico Port Jefferson Sta. NY 11776 USA

Mission:

Mission: A community exercise program in which persons with a cancer diagnosis participate in group classes designed to enhance their recovery process. Services provided will include educating cancer patients and the general public on the benefits of exercise in reducing the risk of certain cancers and improving functional activities.

Results:

Since 2007, SFL has been breaking down access barriers and bringing free, quality specialized exercise therapy to cancer patients and survivors through innovative support programs that are comprehensive and coordinated. The program is unique in that it limits the travel time that participants undertake to access quality, safe and effective exercise therapy for an improved recovery. Moreover, SFL offers its exercise programs to participants free of charge and provides the equipment so the exercise prescription can be continued at home. With a minimum of 4 participants, SFL seeks to institute a group class that is convenient locally and accessible and is open to any adult cancer patient/survivor regardless of gender or diagnosis. SFL holds as many sessions as the communities warrant, providing certified instructors. SFL places a strong emphasis on strength training and reducing risk of cancer recurrence through community partnerships. SFL programs provide comprehensive exercise therapy and fitness education via local schools, churches, community centers, libraries - on regular weekday schedules. Each of the partner sites helps to recruit patients and families, coordinate exercise activities, and reinforce mind over body messages. SFL collaborates with Stony Brook University, Mather Hospital, Northwell Health System, Winthrop University Hospital, Southampton Hospital, Brookhaven Hospital, Good Samaritan Hospital, American Cancer Society, and has a presence on the Suffolk County Cancer Awareness Task Force.

Target demographics:

Strength for Life is open to all adult cancer patients/survivors, regardless of age, gender or cancer diagnosis.

Direct beneficiaries per year:

over 200 participants in classes and retreats.

There are so many positives about Strength for Life exercise classes. Our leader Jacqui Errico is an amazing resource in addition to being a patient, kind and knowledgeable instructor. We are pushed gently and given many options in doing the exercises so that no one hurts themselves. Exercising is important both physically and mentally. Exercising is a great way to get back some sense of control that was lost with the cancer diagnosis. Exercising with cancer survivors forms amazing bonds and gives you another support group, even if you weren't looking for it and didn't know you needed it. Everyone there is a positive role model and we have developed our own caring community. If you do one thing for yourself make it a Strength for Life exercise class!!! It will nourish both your body & soul.

I just finished my first session of exercises classes run by Jacqui Errico at Winthrop Hospital. It was amazing. I learned a lot of new exercises, met a great group of ladies, worked hard and had fun. I definitely feel the benefits of exercising both physically and mentally. Jacqui is a great instructor and has us all laughing. One way or another you will benefit by taking a session. This is a fantastic organization. I have told all my doctors and friends. I highly recommend it to everyone.

If it wasn't for Strength for Life and Jacqui Errico I would probably never exercise. She makes it very enjoyable . I even follow the routine at home. She has a way about her that makes even the hardest routine easy because she will always show me another way to exercise the same part of the body when I can't do it the first way. She is an amazing woman.

I have been an active client for more than a year. The retreat given by Strength for Life is only a bang initiation to the program of weekly exercise classes they graciously volunteer to cancer survivors. Besides the importance of exercise the peer comradeship formed in these classes is priceless. Thank you Jac and Deb for all you do. You restore faith in humanity!

I just attended a Strength For Life Weekend Retreat. It was a great experience to be able to speak with and share stories with other people on their journey back to health. Jacqui, Debbie and Teresa were a great source of information and inspirational. I enjoyed the yoga, Reiki, Fung Shui talk...all interesting. I am grateful that I was able to participate in this retreat.

Strength for Life is a member of the Suffolk County Cancer Prevention and Health Promotion Coalition. They have reached out to the Suffolk County Department of Health Services to share information and promote health and wellness. They are especially supportive of those who are fighting and surviving cancer. All they do is in honor of a wonderful friend. Bravo Strength for Life!

Strength For Life provided a community and support to my mom during her battle with breast cancer. Although we as her family were there for her every step of the way, we couldn't fully understand what she was going through. Strength For Life not only offered fantastic exercise classes, but it also offered my mom a "family" of women who could relate. I will FOREVER be a supporter.

Since my breast cancer diagnosis in April 2014 I have had a hard time knowing when it might be ok to do any physical activity. I had to stop going to the gym after my breast surgery. I later developed neuropathy from chemo and pneumonitis from radiation. Jacqui has helped to see me through all of these times. She'll tell me when I shouldn't participate in a specific exercise or have certain activities tailored for each participant depending on their specific problems. As an exercise class this has been the best and one that I can continue no matter which medical problem I develop.

But...this is much more than an exercise class. It is an informal support group where we've all become friends and help talk each other through issues while working out instead of sitting around a table. There is something to be said for both venues but this is a real life important and helpful way of getting through this difficult time.

I attended the weekend retreat last year and it was an experience that I will always hold dear. Not only was it physically challenging and rewarding but, again, the support and friendship was so important and in a more intimate setting than usual support groups.

I have been struggling to find an exercise class that I enjoyed for years. My doctor has recommended it, and I know it is important to my continuing health. Jaqui's class was the first one I ever truly enjoyed and wanted to go back to. She is awesome, encouraging, and making exercise a fun community experience. I feel better physical and emotionally after attending. It's a win/win and I am so grateful for Strength for Life!

I recently attended the Strength for Life retreat weekend. What a fabulous experience. The women I met were brave and inspiring. The event was very well organized and informative. I walked away feeling relaxed, inspired and empowered to do more for myself. It was a treat to have an event focused on my health and well-being. The entire staff was warm, friendly, happy and sincere.
I also attend the weekly strength for life classes. It has jump started me to exercise. I feel much stronger and capable since beginning these classes. I look forward to seeing the group of ladies and our wonderful instructor, Debbie, each week. We learn exercises that we can do at home (plus have a lot of laughs at the same time). We are all different ages and at different stages of the disease, but have a common bond. I am so very grateful for this organization!
