This Organization is one of the most dedicated places i have volunteered in a long time. They never turn anyone away even if they don't have funding.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

many ways, for example being involved ESL classes, job placements, and many more...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

None

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

Feeling the spirit and the satisfaction of helping other in need.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

Really an awsome group of people to work with.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

help so many people culturaly adopt to their new society. They could fund some of the great programs they have, and start some new ones.

Ways to make it better...

They had more volunteers in this organization.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

Lack of funding for some of their great programs.

One thing I'd also say is that...

Hawa Siad the organizations Executive is one of the most hard working and dedicated people that i have ever met. she cares about the issues of women and children in particular, but immigrant issues in general.

"The Somali Women and Children's Alliance located inside of the Global Mall in Columbus, Ohio is a great resource for anyone, particularly immigrants, in the area. They provide many services, including free ESL classes to immigrants learning English. The staff is very friendly, knowledgeable, and willing to help all that come in. This is certainly a great organization that deserves to be recognized".

Currently I assist with the ESL course in SWCA. I visit two times a week. Working with the Director and Somali community has been a very rewarding experience for me. Everyone has been so hospitable and generous. One time after teaching the ESL class, a student decided to give me a bracelet and said "Thank you." The sincere and concern that the staff show for all who come to them for assistance is truly amazing.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

SWCA of Columbus, Ohio is one of the most caring and dedicated organizations I've been involved with. Their Director and staff are truly committed to assisting Somalian children and women traverse as pain free as possible the many difficulties of life in a new country. The English classes they give are so important as are the counseling sessions. Basically, SWCA is there for the Somalian women and children to turn to when there is no other place to go. The organization performs its mission with great skill and heart

I have been a tutor for the morning Adult ESL class since February, 2009. We meet Monday thru Thursday for approximately 3-4 hours, all year round. We also have an after school program for children. This summer we shall have a children's program again as we did last summer. I was amazed to see the art work the young people created. During the summer we have youth that attend the adult class as well. Some of the youth are able to assist the adults with their school work, which is a good experience for the adults and the youth. The Somali Women and Children's Alliance not only provides ESL but also many types of assistance to those in need. We have helped troubled youth, assisted single mothers and new immigrants with transportation to and from our classes. We assist in arranging appointment and providing transportation when necessary. I personally assisted one young man and his family who had only been in the country for 4 months. We provided necessary support to adapt to our culture which included obtaining a job, keeping appointments, getting a drivers license, understanding bills, etc. This has been a very rewarding experience for me. I enjoy working with the Directors because of their sincere concern for all who come to them for assistance. Even more, I enjoy the Somali Community and other Africans who have attended my class. I have watched their achievements for the last year with great pride.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

By watching the students succeed and obtain jobs, learn to drive and pass their drivers test, learn to communicate in English, and adapt to our culture.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

I would hope for more financial support to enable us to provide more assistance to individuals and update some of our technology.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

Working with a very warm and welcoming Somali community and other Eastern Africans. They have helped broaded my views of other cultures.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

Are very compassionate, dedicated, and willing to assist in any situation.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

It could help hundreds more in need.

Ways to make it better...

If I had more time to volunteer!

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

Financial support

One thing I'd also say is that...

This organization helps women, men and children who are immigrants from East Africa to make their transition to life in the United States easier and more productive. I have seen first hand the way that SWCA helps new residents learn the language, negotiate with agencies, celebrate their culture and provide mutual assistance.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

obtaining a better understanding of the challenges faced by new residents of my city.

I have been a volunteer for the past two years for the Somali Women & Children’s Alliance in Columbus, Ohio. Somali immigrants in Columbus have grown from 20 families in 1996 to over 65,000 with more arriving every day. I have seen first hand this small grass roots organization work to equip women, children and families new to the United States to become self-sufficient and integral members of the greater community The dedicated staff and volunteers provide educational support, youth mentoring, job skills, employment training, ESL classes, and interpretation skills to interface with mainstream agencies. Their case management deals with a wide variety of social issues including domestic violence, human trafficking, mental health, housing, children with special needs, employment discrimination, health and culture. This is an organization that provides critical support to women and children who are particularly vulnerable. The staff and volunteers provide a safe haven that values and understands the language, culture and religion of their clients and are able to interface with other agencies to find the help and fairness. The work of these dedicated individuals never fails to amaze and inspire me.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

witnessing upset women and families who come to the Alliance for help. I have seen staff members work for hours and days to help find answers to very difficult problems and provide ongoing support for the women and families.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

find ways to stabilize the funding sources.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

getting to know the staff, volunteers and the clients. They have been very welcoming, helpful and appreciative.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

dedicated, caring, good natured and fun to work with.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

expand it's help to the immigrant and refugee women and families in the community to become fully integrated into the local community faster and safer. Housing, jobs, good health care, education and citizenship could be dealt with in a systematic way.

Ways to make it better...

I knew the language.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

unstable funding sources, a lack of understanding within the Columbus community about the Somali population, culture, language, religion, and basic needs and a need for a wider support base.

One thing I'd also say is that...

the Somali Women and Children's Alliance continues to provide caring help despite difficult funding times.
