My husband, 4-year old daughter and I went to Open Studios at the Shipyard, we were AMAZED at all the work on display. With room after room in several buildings, it was impossible to see it all in one day.

I am a professional artist at Hunters Point Shipyard. We are a collective group of over 300 artists working at the shipyard since 1986. The Shipyard Trust for the Arts (STAR) is our board that has labored to insure our continued presence there, integrate with the community by sponsoring an artist in residence from the neighborhood, help coordinate our Fall and Spring Open Studios, work with the City of San Francisco and the redevelopment agency as well as the Developers Lenar to insure legal and appropriate disposal of asbestos and other toxins present on the Naval Shipyard. This is a volunteer board and work tirelessly to support and sustain the arts and artists in Hunters Point Naval Shipyard.

Here at Hunts Point Shipyard, one of the largest artist colonies in the US, we would have all been displaced, and without a place to do our art without the tireless services supplied by STAR.

Primarily a volunteer service, their work has enabled the artists of Hunters Point,. San Francisco to stay in their studios and have a secure place to work as well as giving us the ability to interface with the city of San Francisco as they redevelop this area that was known a toxic waste dump. We have lived and worked through most of the clean up and now find ourselves in a redevelopment that will create a new city around us.

Most of Star's financing has come from the artists themselves, donating art that is sold though a yearly auction.

The Shipyard Trust for the Arts really provides an amazing opportunity for the public to find local artists with a broad range of talents under a common umbrella. I so much enjoy their open studio events.

STAR meets and exceeds it's mission to preserve and expand the artist community in San Francisco's Hunter's Point district. STAR has maintained current programs such as the Annual Art Auction & Artist in Residence while creating new programs such as Pass It On & artist studio tours.
