Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Arts & Culture, History Museums

Mission: Rumsey lived in Shepherdstown, and could well be called our first engineer. The Society was formed in 1985 with the purpose of building a working replica of Rumsey's jet-propelled steamboat in time for the bicentennial of his demonstration in 1787. Since doing so, it has regularly demonstrated the boat, called The Rumseian Experiment, and built a boathouse/museum exhibiting the boat and describing Rumsey's life and work.
