The successful execution of the organization's mission to meet nutritional and other special needs of the elderly in order to help them maintain their independent life styles is evidenced by the number of people touched by our home delivered and congregate meal programs. In total, the agency had a favorable impact on the lives of over 3,050 seniors and disabled clients during the year.
Home delivered nutrition - in 2014, meals on wheels of ri, inc. , served 2,298 unduplicated clients on 90 routes statewide. On average, 1,225 nutritious noon-time meals were delivered daily. This equates to a total of 316,524 meals being served to those in need over the course of 2014. This includes 13,790 shelf stable meals delivered to clients in 2014 for times when the weather would not allow us to deliver meals. Over 700 volunteers, many of whom have been delivering meals for several years, utilize their own vehicles and donate their time and labor. They report regularly, at least once per week, even in inclement weather to deliver to the homebound recipients. The estimated value of their annual in-kind service to the agency totals over $625,000. Another benefit of this program is the daily wellness check provided for all of our homebound and frail recipients. On several occasions, this daily contact has proven to be a life saving measure for many. We anticipate that the client base will remain unchanged for 2015.
congregate nutrition - the congregate nutrition program operates for the purpose of providing hot, nutritious meals to the senior population as well as persons under 60 years of age who are disabled. During 2014, meals on wheels of rhode island served approximately 90 meals per day at 7 senior cafes throughout providence; one of those cafes being an ethnic site. The congregate program offers not only the daily meal but also socialization, which is another essential component of a person's well-being. The meals are provided monday through friday to over 450 unduplicated individuals throughout the year. About 12 volunteers assist in the day to day operation of the cafes, making the success of the program possible. The in-kind value of their donated service totals almost $56,460. The restaurant program is another part of the nutrition program which was designed for seniors who are more active and who are able to visit restaurants as part of this active lifestyle. Currently, participants have the choice of dining at 3 local restaurants and their locations throughout the state.
other program services - operation of the emergency response program generated revenue for the organization. The emergency response program offers at risk individuals equipment which allows them to call for help in an emergency with the press of a button. Revenue from this program pays for its operating costs as well as the costs of other social service programs. During the year, approximately 275 individuals utilized this service.
