Address:

1122 E Pike St PMB 1001 Seattle WA 98122 USA

Mission:

Pride Foundation is a community based foundation working to strengthen our gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and allied community today and build an endowment for tomorrow.

Results:

Pride Foundation has invested more than $8 million in nonprofits and students who are building the LGBT community. Every year we support hundreds of organizations, large and small, who are critical to the Northwest LGBT community.

Target demographics:

lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender students and nonprofits serving the LGBT community.

Direct beneficiaries per year:

350

Geographic areas served:

Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon & Washington

Programs:

Education & outreach: provided training and technical assistance on fundraising, grant-making, leadership development, etc. To 350 non-profits and 900 individuals in alaska, idaho, montana, oregon and washington. In each pride foundation community there is a steering committee made up of a core group of volunteers with visionary ideas who support their regional lgbtq and allied community. The volunteers work to raise funds, support one another in leadership development, strengthen community relationships and respond to the needs of the local community.

granting program: awarded cash grants to 230 non-profit organizations. Pride foundation funds organizations, small and large, as they strengthen and serve the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community. Often we hear that our grant is the first an organization ever received. Other times we are funding more established organizations, which are starting to serve the lgbt community. Either way, we are honored to put our community's resources to work supporting organizations we know are making a difference for lgbt equality.

scholarship program: awarded scholarships to 105 students for post-secondary education, with funds paid directly to the institution of learning. Pride foundation scholarships support education and leadership development to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and straight-ally students of any age or sexual orientation from alaska, idaho, montana, oregon, and washington who are pursuing any post-secondary education (including community college, public or private colleges & universities, trade apprenticeships, or certificate programs)! Lgbtq students often do not have access to traditional means of support from families making it more compelling for organizations like ours to exist to support the educational endeavors of these students. Our scholarships have the power to make a huge financial and emotional impact on their lives.

fellowship program: pride foundation fellowship program seeks to cultivate leaders and strengthen the pacific northwest lgbtq community. This fellowship experience will provide an opportunity for professional development as well as an introduction to the work of community leadership organizations by matching 8 exceptional pride foundation scholarship recipients and other lgbtq and ally students with pride foundation grantees and other organizations committed to lgbtq equality.

Reviews for Pride Foundation

I sought out the Pride Foundation as the place where I can establish an advised fund and where I will entrust our estate. I did this because alternatives I investigated spent no time with me to hear my goals, my current situation, or my health challenges. I believe that a foundation needs to know these issues about their contributors so that their subsequent actions can be put in alignment with their donors. This past year I had the privilege of attending their annual scholarship event during which $400K were distributed. I also celebrated with them the successes of marriage equality in WA. In every interaction I have found staff, CEO, and board extraordinary in their commitment and care.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Make it national in its scope.

I've been a donor for many years and volunteer. I have full faith and trust in the Pride Foundation and their vision/mission. They are an honest and trustworthy organization and have been serving the needs of our LGBTQ community in the Pacific Northwest for over 25 years. There is a reason they are still thriving in the philanthropy, they are leaders in giving.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

Their scholarship/granting processes, their annual gratitude report and all the other support they provide our LGBTQ community.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Continue to grow their funding so that they can reach more people and develop leaders in our LGBTQ community.

The Pride Foundation is wasteful and dishonest. First, it wrongly categorizes what should be development/fundraising expenses as program expenses. Further, and more important, it has a history of stealing endowments and not giving first priority to donors' intentions. In one example, it has stolen $500,000+ of an organization's endowment.

The Pride Foundation markets itself as an efficient re-granter. However, it is not. Donors should NOT give to Pride, believing it will be a good pass-through organization for their gifts. Instead, give to an organization directly--the organization will get more of your money, and you won't be paying for the management and administration of an intermediary.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

I have experienced the ill effects of Pride everywhere. They like to pretend--even more than more official groups such as Equal Rights Washington, the Seattle Commission for Sexual Minorities, Basic Rights Oregon and others--that they're the voice of the LGBT community, when they are absolutely not.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

rid Pride of its current management, require an audit to be conducted, conduct a study of its efficacy in actually improving the Northwest's LGBT community, repay the endowments it's taken dishonestly and, if necessary, dissolve the organization and liquidate its assets after it's finished paying out the remainder of the Weiland bequest.
