In 1998, I was living with my 5 year old son in central Florida. That summer, the area was ravaged by wildfires. The smoke from the fires was constant, thick and inescapable. My son, being asthmatic, had been hospitalized for a couple of days with no improvement in his breathing despite all the medical care he was receiving. His pediatrician told me in no uncertain terms, that my only option was to get him out of the area. His chances of survival were growing dimmer each day. Being a single, working mother, I had neither the resources or support system to make that happen. I spent hours on the phone, calling hospitals, airlines and charities to no avail. Then someone told me about Angel Flight. As soon as I contacted them, the wheels started turning. The next morning, my son and I were on our way out of Florida. They transported us all the way to Michigan. When the fires were finally out, Angel Flight didn't forget about us. They made sure that we got safely back to Florida. I can't say enough about this organization. They were amazingly efficient, caring, involved and I could go on and on! But the bottom line is, they literally saved my son's life. And for that I am more grateful than I will ever be able to express.
We have referred many clients over to Angel Flight and we have always gotten a good response about their experience with Angel Flight. In one case in particular, we were contacted by a local police department about a homeless female. After working the case, we discovered she had a college education and had been working until an eye disease limited her vision. Another organization fully funded her surgery, but the operation had to take place 95 mies away in a larger city. Angel Flight provided the transportation for her to get the surgery she needed. The volunteers at Angel Flight showed her respect she had not known since becoming homeless. Since the operation and follow-up visits, the client found work and has found permanent housing. We could not have done this without Angel Flight!
AngelFlight SE is a wonderful organization. I became involved in helping to feed a family and a pilot who had travelled all day after the earthquake in Haiti. A family of four came in to our local airport enroute to a safe haven with relatives in the U.S. They and the pilot were all hungry and exhausted. I now do public speaking and fundraising for the group.
