I have been a volunteer in the cat room for almost 12 years now. While no place is perfect, I can tell you without hesitation that this is a loving place, run by a dedicated and well-meaning staff. Animals are known and cared about as individuals. There is a very large cadre of volunteers (over 500) who are actively involved in all aspects of the shelter and much appreciated.
