Mission: To be a community seeking God by living with the poor;
Share dignity through home-cooked meals, friendship, and the offering of shelter and other basic services;
Resist the dominant culture of violence and addiction through adherence to Christ's law of non-violence, service and serenity;
Embrace the Gospel values of simple living and trust in God's providence, and;
Encounter God through prayer, liturgy, service, and contemplation.
Results: We've sheltered an average of 100 women & children every night for the last 10 years. In that same time we averaged about 3500 meals every week.
Target demographics: Women and children in need of emergency shelter, poor people in need of hot food, small churches in need of "wholesale food" for pantries and motel outreach.
Direct beneficiaries per year: We probably serve about 500 people every week.
Programs: HCWtH - House Church with the Homeless, a non-denominational program of "breaking bread" with homeless people on their level. A ministry of listening.
Orange County Catholic Worker Isaiah House treats all people with dignity & respect. I have volunteered there since 2007 and became a weekly volunteer in 2009. Money & items are well used. The staff is all unpaid volunteers and if donated items can not be used by them, they will get the goods to another organization that can. Dwight is a passionate advocate for the homeless and Leia, Melissa & Nancy somehow manage to keep all the balls in the air even under the most stressful situations. It is a wonderful place and will be a good stewart of donated funds & goods.
