The primary mission of Hearts and Hammers is to keep folks in their homes. Often through illness, financial problems, incapacity or other factors beyond the control of a home owner, they are unable to maintain their residence. H&H organizes a one day a year work blitz to repair the homes of our neighbors. In past years there have been five hundred volunteers working on sixty homes, at no cost to the home owners. All monies are through local donations. We make an effort to not look to corporations, as this disenfranchises volunteers and their donations. Our motto is "Neighbors helping neighbors". A secondary but equally important mission of H&H is to build community. We do not have businesses or churches volunteer as a group to work together, but their volunteers are thrown into the general pool to be assigned according to skills and need for any given project. With hundreds of folks gathering yearly, this project is loved by the community. We know that even in the event of a personal disaster we will be taken care of.
