Global Vision 20/20 has an important mission--the bring sight to people in countries where optometrists are nearly non-existent and eye glasses are an expense way out of the reach of most people. In Rwanda, for example, there are only two optometrists in the entire country, and both are in the city. In most countries, there are no eye tests, and even bus drivers may not be seeing properly. Money and the skills of optometrists will never be available to fix this problem, but Global Vision has a practical and inexpensive solution---a revolutionary new eyeglasses that cost less than $20 a pair. Since they are adjustable---you turn a gadget on the eyeglasses and gas expands or contracts between two pieces of plastic--locals can easily be trained to distribute. Check it out at www.gv2020.org
I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...
A new organization, it is struggling to raise money but spends it well, taking glasses to Africa, so far, and training locals to properly fit and distribute.
If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...
Lobby in Washington to get government-run jobs programs to include eyeglasses for those who need them most so they can do the job properly.
What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...
Since it is new and small, you can find a major role quickly.
The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...
I met the president of the organization, a recently retired major, who has excellent skills and a real passion.
If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...
Deliver a million pairs of glasses, helping kids in school see what they're doing, and helping people be productive at work.
Ways to make it better...
I can't imagine a better experience.
In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...
Finding more sources of money and personnel to get the word out.
One thing I'd also say is that...
A great, new organization with a new technology that can make a huge difference.
