Target demographics: EDV works with disaster survivors worldwide regardless of age, race, or gender

Someone who had 3 hours of volunteer time could: redesign our letter head and make our mail outs more engaging! Alternatively, you could join us overseas on the Philippines on your holiday working on projects ranging from the construction of an evacuation centre to youth empowerment.

Geographic areas served: Worldwide

Mission:
At EDV we believe that to provide meaningful assistance to disaster affected and at risk communities around the world we have to do more than construct buildings. We need to understand and address the factors that make communities vulnerable to disaster. Our work will be organised with these factors in mind so that we can affect change that far outlives our presence. Furthermore, we will make this information available to all volunteers so that they will be empowered to affect positive, long-term change in their day-to-day lives as well as while volunteering.
Results:
Between June 2010 and December 2011, EDV worked in Port au Prince Haiti. We raised £137,000 ($221,492), recruited 190 volunteers who donated more than 51,000 man hours to complete 20 projects. Those projects ranged from classroom reconstruction to health care and education for earthquake affected orphans. Together, our projects in Haiti directly affected the lives of more than 3,000 earthquake survivors.

Thanks to the Vodafone Foundation Grahame Mayer Award, we're now working in the Philippines where we're helping a flood prone community prepare for the inevitable disasters it will face. This programme has just started, but we aim to help hundreds of families prepare for disaster by building an evacuation centre, rescue boats, investing in local capacity, and much more! From the very first moment I ... more »

Filipinos are some of the most friendly and welcoming people I have ever met. I have felt comfortable and at home here since I ... more »
