I have been involved with Dustin's GreenHouse as an adult leader for 2 recent Globetrotter trips-Peru and South Africa. In that capacity, I have helped with program planning, raising funds and awareness and establishing long term relationships with the student and adult team memebers. Both trips were incredibly challenging in very different ways but had the same effect--educational, inspirational, philanthropic, and life changing. I cannot think of a better way for young people to learn about the struggles that exist in this world and to realize that their contribution is meaningful and vital than to participate in a DGH Globetrotter trip!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

My experiences on both trips have had a profound, impact on me and how I live my life. Additionally, the continuing close relationships that I enjoy with the students and other leaders have been incredibly fulfilling.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

helping young people realize their unique skills and abilities and how they can be used in the global community.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

deeply committed, kind and patient. People who genuinely care about the well being of others.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

set up remarkable sustainable projects all over the world!!

As a school counselor I have recommended six high school students to Dustins Green House Globetrotters. Four of these students had never flown on an airplane. Two of them had never seen the ocean. All of them seemed bogged down in the "it's all about me" teen-age malaise. One and all returned understanding that by global standards, all Americans are blessed beyond measure. These students returned more interested in giving back, more concerned about the future, more willing to take risks and to reach out to those who are different. I was so impressed that I paid my own way to be a champerone to Ecuador in 2006. We worked on a construction project for five hot, exhausting days, hiked in a cloud forest, went diving in the Galapogos, and befriended the most incredible people. Dustins Green House is the only organization I know that takes service learning to this level. My husband and I have become donors, knowing that 100% of our donations go to projects and none to administrative costs as volunteers run the organization. Very unique.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

I have referred students, participated in the 2006 trip to Ecuador, and donated. In 2010 two students who went to South Africa came to the school where I work to share with our students about their trip. It was amazing. It meant so much to our students.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

I would not make any changes. They make very efficient use of resources. This non-profit should be a model for others to duplicate their accountability and success.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

participants have an international experience both in giving back and in challenging themselves to take on new experiences.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

organized, kind, friendly, unassuming.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

duplicate itself in other school systems.

Ways to make it better...

I could have participated myself as a high school student.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

the costs and exposure to risk of international travel.

One thing I'd also say is that...

I will never forget going to Ecuador and the people I met. Every one of the students I have referred say the same thing. All of us feel we had the experience of a life time.

Life changing wouldn't be enough to describe the amazing experiences I had in the beautiful country of South Africa. This foundation has granted me the ability to do the two things I love to do most in this world; travel and help others in need. We as a group bonded in ways never imagined and I can truly say that Dustin's Greenhouse is apart of me. Mr. and Mrs. Green have turned a tragedy into triumph by planting seeds of hope into 10 teenagers lives every year and I am so thankful that God has blessed us so that we could be a blessing to others.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in my life. I have become much more grateful for what I have and the opportunities we are blessed with in America.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Try to inform more young adults in Guilford County about the organization.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

The fact that we were able to give back to those in need of help and change views of the "Typical American" to some South Africans.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

I had the honor of spending my three weeks in South Africa with some of the most kind hearted people in the world. From the 9 other students to the 5 leaders we all bonded into a true family.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Have a much larger impact on the world. Change more lives in America as well as other countries across the globe.

Ways to make it better...

My camera didn't break on the second day we were there.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

Enough funding and support from the community.

One thing I'd also say is that...

This organization has opened my eyes to things I would never have thought to see at the age of 18. I am inspired by how much faith the people of Siyathuthuka have even though they may have nothing. They keep family and God first no matter what.

I am a high school teacher and coach in North Carolina. Several years ago I was asked if I would be interested in applying to be a chaperone for a diverse group of students from various high schools in Guilford County who would be travelling to Peru. I applied and was asked to join the group as a chaperone/leader and this changed my life!!! Through months of preparation and team building meetings, I was privilidged to get to know a culturally diverse group of young people who came from a variety of backgrounds; some priviledged and some not, but all with a desire to seek out a future that was fulfilling and meaningful. Many of these students came from backgrounds that would never provide an opportunity to travel internationally and live in a foreign culture. Dustin's Greenhouse is an organization that provides an opportunity for students to experience a different culture and also to be challenged to take control of their life and pursue a future for themselves. The trips allow the students to look at themselves, at their lives, at their blessings, and realize that they can accomplish their dreams by helping them realize that they are capable of great things. For me, I realized many of the same things, that life is meant to be lived and that we should constantly challenge ourselves to be the best person that we can be and that we are good enough and special in our own ways. Dustin's Greenhouse provided an opportunity for me to experience the Peruvian culture and challenged me to make a difference in someone else's life. That is why for the last 2 years, I have returned to Peru to do a total of 10 weeks of mission work in Iquitos, Peru; to make a difference in someone else's life. The truth is, though I have been there to help the people of Peru, the people of Peru have helped me far more that anything I have done there by helping me to be the Christian man I have always desired in my heart. This would have never happened if I had not been invited to share this culture with Dustin's Greenhouse.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

my personal life and the way it changed me to want to help others more.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

reach out to more students who would benefit from this organization and try to do more that 1 trip per year.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

sharing the trip with so many wonderful people.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

amazing, caring people who wanted to help others with a passion.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

be self sustaining and provide more opportunities to students to see their potential.

Ways to make it better...

I had adjusted to the high altitude quicker in Cusco.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

fundraising and getting information out to students who would benefit from what the Greenhouse does.

One thing I'd also say is that...

though this foundation was founded as a result of a tragedy, it has had amazing and positive impact on so many students in our area.

I first heard about this organization from my Philosophy teacher at my HS who had worked on one of their trips before. He recommended me and after a lot of hoping and praying I was chosen to go on the 2010 Summer trip. The trip was packed with inspiring and humbling experiences. Just when you would think to yourself, "This is the most amazing moment of my life, I can't believe this", BAM something even more incredible would happen. The best part about this trip I think was that they showed you what others as tourists see when they visit South Africa, and then they show you all the amazing sights and activities that the country has to offer, and then the showed you the REAL South Africa. They showed me villages, culture, poverty, music, and how many people really live. They gave me the opportunity to live, work, and talk with people who's voices weren't noramlly heard, and eventually with whom I fell in love with. They gave me memories no one else has or I think ever will again, and they gave it to me even though I didn't have any money to offer them. The people who worked with the organization were some of the greatest people I've met and I am so honored to have been given these opportunities. I'm also very grateful to the people who donated to this organization because they helped make my dreams come true in a way greater than I ever thought possible.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

My personal life. The opportunities and experiences that I have obtained through this organization have changed the way I view and percieve the World. They have taught me lessons of moral values such as friendship, gratefulness, compassion, and openess.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

not they type of people I had been expecting to work with, they weren't just other volunteers to me by the end of my trip they were my family.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Change the lives of many teenagers in North Carolina drastically. They could help so many individuals in different countries while at the same time changing the lives and mindsets of of teens.
