Took my wife and granddaughter on the Diabetes Outdoors sponsored trip in the channel islands passage on the Island Packers ship. We saw humpback whales and got a lot of great pictures. We also saw gray whales but they were too far in the distance to photograph. Lars and Trevelin Yahr were great hosts to our group and we really appreciate their efforts to promote healthy outdoors activities for diabetics.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

healthy exercise and fun activities.

Diabetes Outdoors is a local group started by a local family in Ventura CA. The group organizes different social, outdoor events to bring together families who are affected by diabetes and raise awareness that diabetics can do most anything anyone else does! I was happy to see an evening group for parents only which made a world of difference to my daughter, a single mom and mother of a Type 1 son! Before Diabetes Outdoors we knew no one with Type 1! Thanks Diabetes Outdoors!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

I've met other great families finding out that life can be great after diagnosis!

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

FUN FUN FUN

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

informative and helpful!

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

reach a lot more people! Those who have recently been diagnosed feel very alone and overwhelmed-Diabetes Outdoors would be a great group to hook up with early in the D life!

this is a wonderful group dedicated to getting kids with diabetes and their families together and active. my family's been on hikes and as a parent, I've had to opportunity for parent meetups which are an amazing help when dealing with a very isolating disease.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

the times that I've been able to meet with ather parents and caregivers of diabetic children and had the opportunity to discuss issues, ask questions and just know that others are dealing with the same things. My son gets the same opportunity.

Diabetes Outdoors is a new organization with great potential. When families are living with diabetes, active lifestyles and strong communities are essential to success. Diabetes Outdoors provides opportunities to exercise in the beautiful outdoors while connecting with others managing diabetes. When our son was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of four, we needed a support group to encourage us, understand us, and help us get rid of the fear and isolation that can accompany diabetes. When we couldn't find that support, we started Diabetes Outdoors! I hope to see the organization continue its adventures with families, and I would love to see an expansion of its educational and outreach programs.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

the strong community of active families living with diabetes. Setting examples of exercise and healthy eating is the best teaching for the entire family, and success happens when we are connected with others making healthy choices!

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

expand its educational and outreach programs.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

the amazing connection with other families! Living with diabetes isn't easy, and I am happy to have great friendships who understand.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

understanding, helpful, and knowledgable about diabetes-related issues.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

start a walk-in diabetes resource center in the community, and it could also establish a moving "diabetes adventure center" for community outreach and education.

Ways to make it better...

the organization was more mature with a better financial base.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

clients' resistance to lifestyle changes and stereotypes of diabetes.

One thing I'd also say is that...

diabetes management is intimately connected to overall health, and Diabetes Outdoors programs lessens the impact of diabetes by offering fun and exciting ways to take care of yourself!
