Chesapeake Service System’s mission is two-fold. First, it is to provide meaningful work opportunities to people with mental retardation and other severe disabilities, enabling them to reach their full potential in a least restrictive environment that maximizes independence. Second, it is to advocate for changed perceptions and inclusion of people with mental retardation and other disabilities in the community so that the community sees their ability rather than the disability.

Chesapeake Service Systems provides employment for the most severely disabled, people who otherwise would languish in adult daycare. I have been on the Board for over a year now and in that time I have become more and more impressed with how employment changes lives! The jobs range from working in a state of the art laundry facility to creating wiring kits for a cable company. The results are the same...a community of hard working happy co-workers. Most amazing is the improvement shown in those with severe cases of autism. More research needs to be done on this, but I would say CSS has created an environment which has fostered dramatic improvement in their lives and the lives of their families. Go CSS!!!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

Watching the clients work together. Seeing the clear satisfaction on the face of an employee as he shows off how to strip wires for a cable connection kit. Hearing workers talk about how much they want to come to work....that Saturday and Sunday are their least favorite days of the week!

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Make the laundry facility bigger so that more clients could work there!

After touring this facility and seeing the smiles on the faces of the workers --- who are at last are connecting with the world around them because they have meaningful work --- I was hooked! CSS is transforming lives!!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

hearing the personal stories of the people who work there. They take pride in their jobs and it lifts them up. Everyone wants to be engaged in meaningful work that he/she can take pride in a job well done. The disabled are no different!

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

CSS is an amazing organization that helps find employment for individuals with the most profund and severe developmental disabilties. This is CSS' 25th year of helping people help themselves with meaningful paid work opportunities. These job opportunies provide a sense of purpose, independence and self-esteem. Always changing the growing, CSS' new laundry occupational center with large industrial equipment has over 100 individual with severe disabilities working for local hospitals, navy bases, resturants and other companies. The new center, in a povery zone, has helped revitalize the community and has given hope and a new found sense of pride to the individuals who work there and their families. The more funds we are able to raise to complete building the center, the more people with severe disabilities can work and as a result finally have a chance at a normal life.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

...my every work. Working with individuals with severe intellectual disabilities has given me a brnad new perpectie in life and has taught me to cherish each moment and live life to the fullest.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

...the profound developmental changes in the clients. When they enter the program they are typically quiet, and reserved. Those coming directly from institutions are completely disengaged. Within a metter of weeks they literally come alive!

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

Amazing people with great heart and passion for helping clients lead more productive and independant lives.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Create more jobs for the thousands of individuals with severe disabiltiies who are not being served now and are wasting away at home or in adult day care programs.

How frequently have you been involved with the organization?

About every week
