I had the privilege of working for Casa for 11 years. I loved this job more than any other I have ever had and, as I get older, realize that I will be lucky to get even close to level of satisfaction I had helping children, teachers, parents, and community members in Arizona as a Casa employee during the rest of my professional life. Casa's programs, simply put, work. They are built on the principle of fostering healthy relationships and educating both youth and adults on the necessity of understanding how our actions affect one another. i cannot think of a better organization to support as they lead our city in the struggle to end abuse and relationship violence.

As a Casa employee, I was able to visit literally hundreds, if not thousands, of classrooms over the 11 years I worked for Casa. With the POWER program (Positive Outcomes Within Every Relationship), Casa is able to 7th through 12th grade students an alternative to unhealthy and abusive relationships, as well as offer an incredible opportunity for an open, informed discussion about sexual violence and how to prevent it. This is a vital program and our children deserve to have the opportunity to learn from experts.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

in countless ways. One student wrote to me in a note after the POWER curriculum was shared in his class, "from now on, I will listen to my girlfriend." That has stuck with me for years and I will probably never forget it. Casa has a powerful message.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

I would ensure that all of the prevention programs Casa has to offer were funded for schools and community organizations all over the greater Phoenix area.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

helping the youth, parents, educators, and community members of greater Phoenix work together to make our city a safer place to live.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

amazing people with a wealth of talent, empathy, and compassion for children and adults from all walks of life.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

do amazing things for the city, state, country and world. Casa has a unique and under-appreciated message to share with the world.

Ways to make it better...

funding would have remained at a level where I could have continued to work for the agency. I would still be working at Casa today if there were funds to pay my salary.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

a lack of funding and visibility within the community. Relationship violence, in all its forms, is a very difficult thing for people to talk about and Casa helps facilitate this conversation better than any agency in the country.

One thing I'd also say is that...

I am very proud of the years I worked for Casa and feel very fortunate to have worked with so many amazing people over those years.

Tom - YOur comments break my heart actually! You are one of the most talented teachers of middle school and high school students I have ever experienced in my 30 years working with teens. Greatest loss to AZ and to our nation was when the economy began to decline and Casa could no longer employ you full time. I will continue to try to figure out how we can get you back full time as the guy who rocks and literally changes teens lives before our eyes...a very rare but critical needed compenent.

As a volunteer with CASA I have seen first hand the difference the programs make and have read hundreds of thank you letters from the students for helping them to learn how to handle bullies, to know the difference between a healthy relationship and a abusive or violent reationship. They are also given the opportunity to talk one on one with the CASA teachers and if abuse is disclosed CASA contacts the authorties. Their programs aim to prevent distructive behaviors, get help for victims and to stop the cycle of violence and abuse.

Sometimes when we help others it's really ourselves we are helping. After working in the classrooms and offices of schools for 13 years both here in Arizona and in California I wanted to do more to help the students with things that weren't covered in the curriculum, things that could help to make them better students and better adults. Without help the schools can not address issues such as violence and abuse other than using detentions or expelling students. Casa gives the teachers and students the skills to stop the cycle of abuse and violence. It also offers the opportunity to students to come out of the shadows and report their abuse and gives them the support and tools to deal with the damage and to heal, it gave me the tools to understand my own abuse and to heal. I didn't go to work at Casa with that end in mind but from the depths of a little girls soul came peace. After 15 years of both working for and now volunteering with Casa I can say without a doubt Casa does educate people, students, teachers and parents on living a life free of violence and abuse.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

Letters from principals stating that they had less problems with student behavior after having Casa programs at their schools. Heard from the Casa instructors of children who reported their abuse to them and Casa then reported it to CPS

Pat - I can't even imagine how many years you have so generously volunteered your time and given your financial support to Casa. You are such an angel on our shoulders and we can't thank you enough for always being there for us. Your review is very heartwarming. Thank you so much.

CASA has come to our school to present prevention programs. This has resulted in increased awareness of sexual abuse for parents, staff, and students. It has led to student disclosures which have enabled us to help these children receive the help they needed. It has taught students what to do in a situation that is threatening and helped them to understand their rights to personal safety and the importance of informing an adult of threatneing situations. I have also made referrals to CASA for many years for help to victims of sexual assault and abuse.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

Talking with and working with students after they had the CASA presentations and also CASA one on one conversations.

I was a VP for National/Alamo Car Rental and actively involved in the Az Governor's Counsel for Domestic Violence and attended numerous meetings with a myriad of different organizations and got to know Stephanie Orr and Casa very well. I felt then and now that Mrs. Orr's agenda at Casa was incredibly pure and that her staff and its work at Casa is and will always be very important. The work done there is so important!!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

Numerous stories of the success of programs from the counseling to the bullying programs so needed in the schools. Emphasis on prevention is very important. Many domestic violence organizations only focus on assistance after the fact. Casa is the best!!

Sheryl...you cannot imagine how much it means to us to have recieved these great remarks from you about Casa. Your leadership and support of Casa in AZ;particularly in the challenging financial years after Sept 11, 2011 was instrumental in keeping Casa alive! In fact, you and Ginger Clayton and others in the Sunflower Foundation you all estalished must know that if it weren't for you, Casa would not be providing services today.

CASA's programs to educate and highten awareness within our community on ways to prevent our children from becoming victims of bullying, and sexual predators. Amazing programs with immediate and measurable results!!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

Witnessing young women learning how to save themselves from entering an abusive relationship; children learning ways to seek help when threatened.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

We need more people in our community to be aware of this fabulous program; and how we do have the power to make change!!

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

the many ways you can actually "see" the results of effort: kids empowered, teachers have the confidence to follow-through on programs, great feedback from the schools at every turn!

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

engaged with the community and their schools, bright, energetic,

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Ways to make it better...

the was more help for CASA. There's so much to do, and so often, not often hands-to-help or financial resources

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

helping the community learn about their programs, and latest efforts. Once you find out what CASA has done, there's no way you wouldn't want to take part in that change.

One thing I'd also say is that...

Anyway to help save a child from harm has to be supported. And to stop a child from growing into an angry teen or battering adult.....the postive ripple effect is endless!

I have heard about the wonderful work that this organization is able to accomplish in Phoenix. It is evident that all involved in this organization are helping to build a civil, caring society, where compassion reigns. However, every great, amazing organization needs someone at the helm who understands the needs of a community and searches for answers. Stephanie Orr is that person. As the leader, she helps instill in all of her staff that life is about continuous learning and modeling the compassionate life.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

learning about how schools have received the training and the children have learned new skills that have worked for them.
