Mission: Bridges to community's mission is to build a more just and sustainable world through service learning and community development by engaging volunteers to work in developing countries--building community and changing lives.
Programs: Bridges to community's health program focuses on preventive care as well as improvements to infrastructure. Our projects range from education workshops to the construction and repair of health centers and hospital facilities. We dig wells and build water systems to deliver potable water, dramatically improving family living standards, reducing disease and child mortality, freeing girls and womens time, as well as improving school attendance. We design and build hygienic latrines to improve sanitation and install high-efficiency indoor stoves to reduce illnesses. Bridges also provides professional medical and dental care, and conducts health-related workshops for children and adults living in underserved rural communities.
bridges to communitys housing program builds sturdy cinderblock homes that are earthquake resistant and are designed to withstand years of heavy winds and rain. Bridges works to secure land titles for the owners so that families have a place to call their own for generations.
our education program works to ensure that there can be educated leaders, doctors, engineers and skilled workers in the next generation. We construct classrooms, libraries, and other school buildingscreating safe and secure environments for learning to take place. In addition, community schools provide a space for adults to advance their education through evening and weekend workshops.
bridges to communitys economic development program seeks to strengthen farmers economic security through education and the implementation of sustainable farming practices. With a focus on three main areascrop diversification, sustainable farming methods and increased access to marketfarmers will see an increase in agricultural output and, along with it, better opportunities for their familys future.
As a former president of a chapter of Bridges to Community, I feel highly indebted to this organization. First, because of my trip with B2C to Nicaragua, I was regained by belief in the good of service and the possibility of effecting change through dedicated non-profits. Second, I have learned more about another country in the world. Third, due to my learning about others, I have in turn learned about myself, and seen what moves me. Communities like Siuna where Bridges operates motivate me to emulate the same hard-working attitude and drive to improve the world around me that the locals there all so clearly share. Finally, my B2C trip gave me new friendships, in a new country, that I know will last me for my whole life.
The impressions my students get from this trip is what keeps me going back year after year. One of my students stated that: “Leaving the people behind when we depart is the most difficult part of the trip, but what eases the transition is going to sleep at night knowing that you have allowed a family to no longer worry about not having a roof over their head."
Bridges staff is beyond professional, and sets a very high standard for every aspect of the operation. They are polite, friendly, and enthusiastic and it is contagious! As a teacher who has taken many school trips over the years, Bridges is by far the most accommodating I have encountered. Every student should be fortunate enough to experience a Bridges trip in their lifetime!
