Target demographics: We support education at all levels from kindergarten to university for refugees from Burma.
Direct beneficiaries per year: 140 University students, 70 high school and vocational school students, 80 teachers, and about 2000 primary school children.
Geographic areas served: Thailand, India
Mission:
Believing that the ultimate hope of peace for mankind lies in education, and knowing that many refugees and displaced persons are in a situation in which education is terribly difficult, the Brackett Refugee Education Fund is committed to assisting refugees or displaced persons of any race, nationality or creed, to acquire education. Many refugees have a strong desire to serve their people. We try to help them discover a world beyond the narrow ethnic confines of a refugee camp, and to equip them with the tools and skills to help them serve their people.
Results:
During our first decade we have:
Raised over $1 million to support refugee education;
Supported college and university scholarships for over 100 students annually;
Provided 50 grants annually to study in high school or vocational school;
Supported four boarding houses with a home-like environment to enable children in remote areas to attend school;
Supported a school for the children and staff at the clinic run by the legendary Dr. Cynthia Maung;
Underwrote operations including teachers salaries for 12 primary school serving an estimated 1700 Karen and Shan school children;
Supported 10 primary schools for internally displaced people inside Burma;
Led the way in encouraging refugees of all ages to learn Thai, the language of the country they are living in.
