Rating: 4.67 stars   3 reviews

Issues: Disabilities, Human Services, Sports

Location: PO Box 26014 Tempe AZ 85285 USA

Mission: Our mission is to advocate for persons with developmental disabilties as valued and participating members of the community.
Programs: The Arc of Tempe Life-Skills and Recreation program fills a unique niche in the community and in the lives of local adults with developmental disabilities. The program focuses on both practical and interpersonal skills, with activities ranging from learning to use public transportation to learning positive ways to assert oneself. Civic responsibility and participation are a major focus, so many of our activities occur in various places around the community. As participants become more involved in their community and become more comfortable in their role as members of the community, so does the community become aware that persons with developmental disabilties have many unique gifts and talents that strengthen and enrich the community as a whole.

Our son has been an active member of the recreation program operated by The Arc of Tempe. It has provided him with the opportunity to go into the community with his friends.... and has provided us an opportunity to go out without having a concern for his safety and well being. I know the organization has members that have helped other parents gain much needed services from governmental agencies. The one problem I see is a great need for additional space to better meet the needs of the people that they are providing services to in the recreation area.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

a safe place for my handicapped son to go where he can enjoy social activities with peers, outings in the community, participation in Special Olympics and much more.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

the number of caring volunteers who have become friends for life.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

Over the almost 40 years of involvement with this organization the majority of the staff have been very caring and helpful.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

It could buy land and build a larger recreation center with a commercial kitchen, exercise equipment, a multi- purpose room with a stage for performances, where more handicapped individuals would be served.

Our son has been a participant in the recreation program for many years. This provides him with many friends and the opportunity to become involved with most every aspect of our community. For example, they attended a city council meeting and this has resulted in his attending other government functioned activities. The program provides us some free time and provides him the time to be with his friends in a fun setting.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

friendly, concerned and caring.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

build the much needed community center that they have been working toward for several years.

I have been involved with the ARC in several roles in the past 5 years. I started as a volunteer arts/crafts teacher. I was a board memeber for a year or two and I chaired the Program Committee. I am now a part time staff person as of last week! My co-workers have all been there for years...many 5+. This is a true testament to The ARC and all that it stands for. I had volunteered and worked with children for many years before making the switch to work with adults. I found out about the ARC through a community Volunteer Fair at our public library. I believe that services for adults are largely overlooked and services for adults with Developmental Disabilities even more so.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

...my everyday life! Getting to know the "participants" and getting them involved in everyday events that most folks take for granted has been a true gift for me. My problems are not so big after coming home from a day at the ARC.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

build a bigger volunteer program to help save money on staffing costs.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

...the unconditional love that I receive from the "participants" and the staff. In a world for of judgment and criticisms, it's a breath of fresh air to walk in to a group of folks who love and accept you unconditionally.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

the best I have come across. I have 30 years experience in Non-Profit Management so I have lots to compare to! The staff & volunteer personal are all long term. Many start as PT staff while in college & choose to stay even after graduation & FT jobs!

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

build a bigger facility to serve more adults with DD. We have the property to build on, just no money to build. We could also provide more scholarships for those who can not afford to participate.

Ways to make it better...

I didn't have to see participants sit on the couch while everyone else eats dinner simply because they can not afford it. It breaks my heart.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

space, space and more space. We are out growing our facility.

One thing I'd also say is that...

I believe I have learned more from the participants then they have learned from me. I am truly grateful for The ARC of Tempe. It is a huge blessing in my life.
