Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Children & Youth, Food, Nutrition, Physical Fitness & Community Recreational Facilities, Sports, Youth Development Programs

Mission: America On Track's mission is to help children and families from all walks of life move toward a brighter future. The organization's vision is to create healthier communities by providing evidence-based programs that focus on leadership development, mentoring, fitness & nutrition, drug use prevention, and academic achievement.

Programs: Physical education program (pep): in 2011, america on track received another 3-year carol m. White physical education program grant to implement the on track through fitness project, a comprehensive physical activity, health, and nutrition program to directly serve k-12 students to help them meet state standards. On track through fitness was designed by incorporating multiple evidence-based model programs to serve disadvantaged hispanic youth living in the most impoverished neighborhoods in santa ana, california. America on track, with eight collaborative community partners, addresses critical gaps as well as enhances health and fitness services at nine schools (four ocde/access high schools and five private catholic k - 8 schools). The overall goal is to improve the children's physical education by providing instruction in physical fitness activities, healthy eating habits, and good nutrition, with an ultimate goal of creating lifelong healthier habits. Evaluation results: aot staff continued to provide weekly physical education and nutrition education sessions for over 1,700 students at 9 school sites. After researching the latest state-of-the-art multisensory brain-body fitness training systems, aot donated a $30,000 system (from allocated pep funds) to christ cathedral academy. Smart (sensory, motor, activity, reaction, training) technology integrates brain fitness with body fitness -- it improves speed, reactions, and concentration in a fun, challenging, full-body workout experience for all ages and abilities. Aot coordinated training sessions to help the school staff learn how to use the new equipment. In partnership with northgate markets, aot supported their viva la salud project by donating two brand-new produce coolers for two of their santa ana stores. The new produce coolers are prominently featured at the front of the produce section near the entrance of the store and they include a sign that promotes america on track and a healthy living message. Finally, aot partnered with the city of santa ana to help build their 4th exercise park at memorial park. Through funds from our physical education program grant specifically allocated for fitness equipment, america on track donated $45,000 to the city of santa ana and worked with them to identify the fabulous greenfields exercise equipment that was installed. Aot has seen outstanding results with the pep project: 47% increase in the % of students meeting cardiovascular fitness targets and 48% increase in the % of students reporting consuming the recommended minimum of two fruits and three vegetables daily (among other great results).

america on track continued to implement a tobacco prevention project (an innovative, comprehensive, community-based program that is being implemented throughout orange county - funded by the orange county health care agency) in the cities of orange, newport beach, rancho santa margarita, san juan capistrano, and mission viejo. The goal of the project is to lower youth access to tobacco. This is done by working with local tobacco retailers (274 in the 5 targeted cities) to educate them on the state laws that prohibit selling tobacco to minors. Evaluation results: aot staff conducted over 800 merchant education training sessions with the commercial tobacco retailers, which led to the following results: i) lowered the number of retailers willing to sell tobacco to minors to zero; ii) helped 235 out of 274 (86. 4%) commercial tobacco retailers become compliant with window signage laws; iii) helped 207 out of 274 (75%) commercial tobacco retailers reach the 5 star merchant status; iv) raised by 179% the number of people who knew the $200 fine for providing tobacco to a minor from year 1 to year 3. Additionally, aot staff conducted over 100 presentations to businesses, civic groups, and parent organizations and collected 2,147 pre and post surveys.

america on track is implementing a 5-year grant (2010-2015) from the california tobacco control project to reduce secondhand smoke exposure in santa ana, orange, tustin, and costa mesa for our smoke-free outdoor dining and smoke-free child care objectives, and throughout orange county for our smoke-free multi-unit housing objective. Evaluation results: efforts under this grant during fy2014 have yielded the following results: 11 multi-unit housing complexes and 1 condominium association adopted a 100% smoke-free policy including individual units and balconies, representing a total of 720 residential units; 35 licensed residential child care facilities adopted 100% smoke-free policies for their properties, and 13 restaurants adopted smoke-free outdoor dining policies.

Our Santa Ana community apartments had the great benefit of having Diane come out and give Nutrition classes to our residents. She was very professional, engaging, and knowledgeable. Her lessons were super fun and encouraged the residents to change their nutrition habits.

America on Track is a great organization dedicated to helping people improve their health through education. This is the 2nd year I have worked with them to help educate low income adults about their nutrition choices and how these choices can affect their health. Kris is an excellent presenter, he kept the clients engaged, brought informative hand outs and displays to give residents visual references about their bodies and health. Kris shared recipes with samples to show residents how they can prepare nutritious meals and snacks on a budget. The America on Track presentations have encouraged residents to eat healthier, try new things and make a more conscious effort in caring for their health. I look forward to bringing them back next year to present.

America on track has been a great addition to the programs at our facility. We have collaborated with this agency for the past few years and our families LOVE IT! The educational components along with the easy to understand recipes are always a hit! Considering we are one of the cities with the highest obesity rate in Orange County, I believe it is imperative that we assist the families by offering these types of classes. Diana is also great with the kids to the point that she knows most of them by name. We always look forward to hosting these wonderful programs at our facility and I believe America On Track is leading the way for our future by teaching them the basics of nutrition and giving them the hands on training to try these recipes with their families.

We had Kris come in to do a series of nutritional classes for our students. He did a great job engaging with our students, and continuously changed the beat of his lectures to keep the kids interested. We also loved the food that he presented; like most kids, our students are averse to veggies, but Kris was able to make the food more appetizing. These classes were truly informative, and it was our pleasure to have Kris at our site.

I work with low income residents in Brea, CA. We had Kris come out and give Nutrition classes to the after school program youth. He was very professional, engaging, and knowledgeable on the subject. He kept the lessons fun for the kids and encouraged them to try the healthy food/snacks he provided for them. The students learned a lot and would talk about the lessons with me after he had left. His visuals and facts were critical to the kids' learning. He never made any of the kids feel bad for having a wrong answer, rather he talked it out with them until they arrived at a right answer by themselves. I would enthusiastically recommend America On Track (and especially Kris) to any programs looking to host Nutrition Classes.

Mentoring gives you the opportunity to facilitate someone’s life by sharing your knowledge learned through years of experience. In October 2014 I had the opportunity to come across America on Track and their Brighter Futures for Children of Prisoners Program. The moment I learned of the program it hit home and made me wish that there was a program such as this to get our family through our hard times growing up. Becoming a mentor to a 14 year old young lady has been an extremely rewarding experience for not just myself, but for my mentee as well.
We have had many opportunities to go to multiple Honda Center Events, compliments of America on Track. She didn’t even know who Shania Twain was, but we had an unbelievably great time at her concert!
My mentee and I have built a relationship that will definitely last a life-time. Thanks America on Track!

I have been a mentor at America On Track for the past year. Becoming a mentor at America On Track is one of the best decisions I have ever made!!! I look forward to meeting with my mentee every week. All together it has been such a rewarding experience. It's also great to know that I have a strong team of people at America On Track that are willing to help should the need arise. My favorite part about America On Track is that it offers parents education on nutrition. America On Track also encourages children to read by giving them free books that are age and reading level appropriate.

We here at the Villa appreciate Diane, our nutritionist for so many reasons. She provides us with nutritional facts such as label reading on food packaging. She explains to us exactly what each section means and the recommended serving size.
Diane also provides us with tips on grocery shopping. She has informed us on how to shop on a budget and how to double check the receipts after purchasing to ensure we have paid the correct amount.
She gives us valuable tips on how to deal with young children while shopping at the grocery store. As we all know, children tend to want everything when shopping. She has given us ideas and suggestions on ways to distract children while shopping to avoid over buying on needless items.
Overall, Diane has taught us how to maintain healthy lives through our eating habits, and she has taught us how to manage our grocery purchases on a budget.
We truly appreciate all the information she has provided to us. We would like to thank Diane for helping the ladies here at the Villa learn the value of nutrition and we would also like to thank her for the delicious salads she brings to us every week. Diane's efforts are much appreciated.
Sincerely, The Women at The Villa

I have been a volunteer for America On Track’s Brighter Futures for Children of Prisoners Program for the past 4 years in which I mentor a beautiful little girl once a week for two hours.

This is a very structured program where the results are very rewarding not only for the mentees and their families but for the mentors as well. Aside from the guidance that the mentors receive from the cofounders of the organization, Terry and Claire, as well as the staff of the organization the many advantages that come from the program are: Special outings such as free tickets to events at the Honda Center, letters of recommendation for the mentors, a Holiday Party where mentees receive Christmas gifts and mentors get awards and recognition for their volunteer hours, STEM activities, free books for the mentees, free mini-golf tickets, a really fun summer educational camp where I got the chance to be a counselor this past summer and free health seminars for the families.

Being a part of this organization has taught me a great deal of things. Although challenging at times, being with my mentee has been a wonderful experience that I would not change for anything. Additionally, the support that I have received from Terry and Claire have made me push myself into becoming not only a better mentor but a well rounded person thanks to the various conversations we’ve had at the different events. It is clear that they personally care about each and every one of us involved in this wonderful program.
