Advocates for Adolescent Mothers is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and social enterprise committed to empowering young parents by providing them with the tools, resources, and support needed to break the cycle of poverty, establish prosperity, and prevent child abuse.
Advocates for Adolescent Mothers is most proud of our Educational Empowerment Grant Initiative due to its strong potential to accomplish our mission to break the poverty cycle among families headed by young parents. Through the Educational Empowerment Grant Initiative, young parents have the opportunity to earn a monetary grant up to the amount of $500, receive mentoring, and participate in bi-monthly workshops throughout the academic year that impart knowledge about managing the roles of being a parent and college student. This program is still in the piloting phase, and we are entering our second year in 2012. Through our toy drive, we collect and donate toys to the children of homeless young mothers at Christmas time. Through our signature event, the Back to School Celebration, we have provided approximately 100 young parents with backpacks that contained school supplies and toiletries. The purpose of Advocates for Adolescent Mothers’ Back to School Celebration is to promote education and encourage young parents to return to school. Our Back to School Celebration is the only Chicago event to offer this level of much needed support to young parents.
Young parents between the ages of 13-24.

Reviews for Advocates for Adolescent Mothers
AFAM is an amazing organization, I have personally witnessed the positive impact AFAM provides for young mothers. So many times we see nonprofits come and go but I know and believe Advocate for Adolescent Mothers is here to stay. AFAM is committed and invested in their mission by supporting teenage mothers and helping them to stay focused on education. I had the honor to be a part of the Lucheon Host Committee and the experience was richly rewarding to my heart.
I have had the privilege to work with AFAM for the last 2 years. This organization is so wonderful supporting adolescent mothers who I feel is a forgotten and misunderstood population, who is so deserving of our support. Paramount Staffing and my Church (Union Evangelistic Baptist Church) has supported the Holiday Drive the last 2 years. Myself and Paramount also supported the After School Matters Advocacy Program (Career Advisory Panel Event) and really enjoyed mentoring and sharing our careers with the teen mothers. Lillian Harris is a dedicated mentor and leader for these teen mothers and I look forward for continued support of AFAM.
As a teen mother myself I stand 100% behind AFAM and is why I have been a supporter and donor since day one. The opportunities that AFAM is able to afford these young women I wish someone like them was around when I needed help. Lillian is nothing short of amazing and I can't wait to see what she does next!
I had the opportunity to work with AFAM over the last 3 years on a number of projects and Lillian Harris does an amazing job working with students who are on the brink. She builds up their esteem, teaches them responsibility, and presents real world solutions to what they are up against. If you are interested in being involved in an exceptional program, AFAM is definitely the one!
It is an amazing program, organized and directed by an amazing person! I've recently became a donor and volunteer. It is astounding to watch the transformation that occurs to the participants in the AFAM program! IkishaG
I became aware of Advocates for Adolescent Mothers when I applied for the Educational Empowerment Program Grant to help pay for my last semester of college. Since then, I have finished school, graduating from Roosevelt University with a BA in Psychology. I was the first person in my family to not only earn a college degree, but a high school diploma as well. I am so grateful to have met Lillian Harris and being apart of AFAM. I too became a mother at a young age, but being apart of AFAM, I learned that my dreams were not impossible to reach because I had a child young. Lillian Harris has taught me to use the obstacles that I have been faced with as motivation to exceed expectations. AFAM gave me a sense of belonging and a platform to share my story with other young moms and to be able to celebrate the accomplishments that no one thought we could achieve. I am thankful to have been apart of such an amazing organization.
I have been supporting and donating to Advocates For Adolescent Mothers (AFAM) since its conception. I love the purpose of the organization. Often times young women are ridiculed for poor decisions when in fact it is those times that the need the most support. Being able to donate money and time to AFAM has been so beneficial; to the moms I have helped, as well as to myself. The young ladies I have cone in contact with have taught me how to be more compassionate and empathetic to those around me. Without an organization and an affiliation like AFAM, I might have missed on that self growth opportunity.
I have always appreciated and valued groups that aid teens. When I was I introduced to AFAM shortly before becoming a single parent. Now I appreciate the organization even more so. Being a single parent is hard enough without the add pressure of being a teen who wants to fight becoming a stereotype. AFAM enables young women the resources to make the right choices for themselves and their children. I will continue to support this organization however and when ever I can.

I am a volunteer with AFAM! I helped out recently with the After School Matters program. Lillian was a great mentor to the young ladies there. She gave valuable information and shared her story to give the young ladies a sense of guildance. I decided to volunteer because I am a young my myself and I always looked to Lillian as a mentor. With me being around the young ladies age I chose to share my story just because I could talk to them as my peers.. AFAM is a great organization overall!
As a former board member, I have and continue to see the passion and persistence of Lillian Harris and other board members to take AFAM's mission to higher heights. Excited that AFAM focus on our young women and give them an opportunity to excel and achieve despite of teen motherhood.
AFAM is an awesome organization that really focus' on assisting teen moms on a consistent basis. AFAM helps in the areas of school uniforms, scholarships for mothers to continue their education and various Outreach programs. I'm excited every year to help donation & contribute toward the Holiday gift & coat drive for children.
I commend AFAM's Founder, Lillian Harris, and their awesome partners on their consistency and dedication to the committment of Young Women and thier children!!
AFAM Continue to make a difference!!
