Issues: Arts & Culture

Location: PO Box 693 Pleasanton CA 94566 USA

Mission: The Academy of Hawaiian Arts, founded in 2003 under the artistic direction of renowned Kumu Hula (hula master) Mark Keali'i Ho'omalu, is a resource for Northern Californians who wish to cultivate and evolve the traditional arts of Hawaii. With California home to the largest population of Hawaiians outside of Hawaii'i in the United States, the need for a school and cultural institution that will promote the perpetuation of the culture outside of Hawai'i is apparent. The Academy provides instruction in a variety of performing and literary arts, prepares students for professional activities in the Hawaiian cultural arts, and acts as a resource for the Hawaiian community in Northern California.
Programs: Hula: AHA provides instruction in Hawaiian dance (hula) for adults and children. Students perform in professional productions as well as public exhibitions. Music: AHA provides instruction in Hawaiian music.
