Review for Communities In Schools of Greater Central Texas, Inc., Killeen, TX, USA

Rating: 5 stars

I have worked with CIS at both an alternative campus and a middle school. I have worked with children in situations of extreme poverty and helped their families with food, assistance at the holidays, and encouraging their children to stay in school and get an education. At the alternative school, I talked to students about going to college and/or pursuing job training. Often times, their family members hadn't completed high school and there was an attitude in the family that education and job skills weren't necessary. I brought in speakers and provided information to help the students see some of the amazing opportunities out there. Several years later, I love to see the students in jobs in the community!

I currently work at a middle school. Hands down, middle school is one the hardest developmental stages we go through in our lives. Emotions and hormones are exploding! Students are seeking independence and learning to think for themselves. I am cheerleader and advocate for them as they strive to succeed at a complex time of life. More often than not, students come into my office for support with peer conflicts. We all get together and talk through the problem with hopes of mending a friendship. Unfortunately, there are times when students are the recipients of hurtful words and bullying. I am safe person to come cry to and get some encouragement as they stand up for justice. Their struggles aren’t just limited to the classroom and they often come in with issues with their family, boyfriend, or girlfriend. Middle schoolers have such depth and heart! They see a lot things that go on with their peers and they come here seeking intervention for friends who are experimenting with big consequences. Middle school might be a hard time in life, but it is fun too. This office sees its share of tears and laughter, a little bit of dancing, … and a lot of discussion about the real issues in our lives.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

Daily I get to serve students in crisis mode. They come to me when they think they are pregnant, their family is in conflict, or they have hard decisions to make. I am a confidant and a safe caring adult.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Have more funding for activities. Transportation costs alone make it difficult to do anything outside of the school
