Review for YTH, Oakland, CA, USA

Rating: 5 stars

This organization is excellent and has conducted some of the seminal work on youth and technology. The organization works diligently to advance the health of young people through technology. There are numerous examples of how this has been actualized. For example, they have developed, with cultural humility and competency, a program to connect transgender youth to health services and support. Another example is that they conducted a national study to understand cyberbullying among youth. The list goes on. The work and impact of the organization has garnered significant media attention, with stories in over 50 media channels, including CNN, MSNBC, The Guardian, Yahoo! News, The Huffington Post, The Journal of Adolescent Health, NBC, latino men. The organization also hosts an annual conference that brings together hundreds of the brightest minds in youth advocacy, health, and technology to showcase what works, share ideas, and seed collaborations. For anyting having to do with youth, technolgy, and health, YTH is THE go to organization.

Does talking about sex with adolescents cause them to become sexually active earlier? Should we tell youth about birth control and condoms? These are the questions that we have asked ourselves and found some answers (talking about sex doesn't cause youth to have sex and comprehensive information is necessary). Today, we have a different set of questions. How do young people "hook-up" on the internet and are these relationships more risky? Where do adolescents go online to get information about sexual topics and what do they learn? Can new media be used to engage youth in health promotion activities and to provide accurate and trusted information? These new questions are the one's being adeptly addressed by Deb Levine and ISIS. While many choose to bury their head in the sand or try and keep adolescents from accessing media (aka, my kids aren't allowed on Facebook), ISIS is developing the means to make these new information mediums powerfully useful for youth. They also convene the best thinkers around the world to address these issues in their SexTech Conference. Most important of all, they have a dedication, passion and committment for helping young people that is unsurpassed. I can not recommend them more highly. Look at their website and see for yourself!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

Participating in the SexTech Conference and reading the recently released white paper on youth sexuality and reproductive health in the digitial age.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

help them find ways to grow.
