My Nonprofit Reviews

Review for Starfish to the Sea Animal Rescue, Lucernemines, PA, USA
My husband and I have independently rescued dogs and horses periodically over the past decade as time and finances permitted. The number of animals we were able to help was nowhere near the amount helped by Crystal but because of our own experiences, I know firsthand the difficulties which come with rescue work. I also know I couldn't do what Crystal does on a full-time basis. She selflessly offers assistance to others and has extended this to myself in the past when I've had a difficult case to place in the form of offering courtesy postings on her website and help with adoption contracts.
I highly respect the quality care she maintains. She backs her compassion with unwavering commitment towards the animals lucky enough to be accepted into her rescue. The animals in her care receive the best medical care and often times take part in obedience classes while being fostered. She is always honest about the animals' behavior and seeks the best possible home for their needs.
One of the biggest differences I see in Crystal's rescue versus others is the active involvement with the foster parents/foster homes. I've fostered for other rescues and have always been dismayed when after finalizing the adoption, I am no longer given updates on said animal nor even included in the initial adoption process itself. Crystal includes her foster homes and values their input regarding adoptions.
A few years ago, I spoke with Crystal before departing on a flight. I asked if she would help place my animals in the event of my untimely death. I do not know anyone else I'd want to ask that same question to. This is because I know how much Crystal strives to find the very best possible long-term home for those she fosters AND she remains a part of their lives afterwards.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...
I truly respect the work Crystal does for the animals she rescues. I've enjoyed watching the animals thrive under her loving, knowledgable care. I was impressed by her generous treatment of the general public and admire the unyielding determination to make a difference, one at a time.
If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...
The only improvement I can think of would be increased invitations/communication for volunteers to continue to help out, aside from fostering. Perhaps someone in charge (a 'head volunteer' if you will) of contacting those willing to place phone calls, assist in adopt-a-thon events, participate in fund-raisers, organize donation drives, etc. would be helpful in this regard. Otherwise, it is difficult to know how to help, especially when you are not able to foster.
