Review for Alliance for Childrens Rights, Los Angeles, CA, USA
During Summer 2010 I traveled to Los Angeles (I am from Europe, Switzerland), where I interned for the Alliance for Children's Rights (ACR), an organization devoted to protect the rights and future of abused and impoverished children throughout Los Angeles County.
Although I was not familiar with the system here in the US, the ACR let me help the Guardianship's department. I went to court with my supervisor, I interviews families, I prepared documents for the attorney, etc. The staff was always really helpful and kind. I had so many questions, but i never felt like my supervisor or other people were tired of my questions, my comments, etc. They were always happy to help me understand how the Alliance and the system work. This organization made me feel welcomed and at ease. My time there was enjoyable and I learned a lot from the members of the ACR. I am so thankful for the time I spent at the ACR.
If you are interested to be part of this AMAZING organization and team, I encourage you to volunteer. It is a great opportunity to help children and families, to make a difference in someone's life! The Alliance for Children's Rights would truly appreciate your time and work. Believe me, it is a rewarding experience.
I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...
I experienced the results of the organization when my supervisor told me that my cases (after having been placed with an attorney) were closed, meaning children were safe and in a better place than before thanks to our work :)
If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...
I wish more people knew about this organization and about the work, the staff, the values, the mission etc. In a perfect world, i wish everyone could give a bit of his time to the needed children of Los Angeles through the Alliance of Children's Rights.

Did your volunteer experience have an effect on you? (teaching you a new skill, or introducing new friends, etc.)
- I was able to adapt to a non-french speaking environment; - i was able to assist parents, grandparents, families, etc.; - I was able to connect and work with people from different backgrounds and cultures (I learned so much!); - I was able to discover another part of Los Angeles; - I was able to make several friends that I know I will keep in touch with; - but most importantly, I was able to do what I like: help children by protecting their rights.
How did this volunteer experience make you feel?
My internship at the Alliance was very enriching and interesting on a professional level, but also on an human level. It confirmed my desire to work with needed children and try to bridge the gap between rich and poor communities.
