Review for Local Hope Guatemala / Xela AID Partnerships for Self Reliance, Sunset Beach, CA, USA

Rating: 5 stars

Having worked with many non-profits in over 6 different countries providing medical care, I have found Local Hope to be the most sustainable and successful for setting a frame work for those we are serving to truly become self-reliant and creative to change their own lives, community and politics! It has been an awe inspiriting journey for the last 17 years. It is exciting to see what more will happen in the next few decades.

I have been working with Local Hope in Guatemala for the last 16 years. The most recent volunteer trip to the target community brought me back in touch with the smiles and joy in the people’s faces that make it all worth while. This trip August 2023, was particularly productive and relaxing more than any other because of how well the staff in Guatemala were given the authority to move a head of us and prepare more and participate as the trip leaders. I was astounded at their maturity, caring and leadership to make the trip as fun and productive as possible. It is truly a dream being able to help people for lasting results.

As Board Member of Local Hope Guatemala/Xela Aid, I am always amazed at the ingenuity and high standards kept for our organization in the US and in Guatemala. We just returned from a trip to Peru, where it had been planned to not only enjoy this beautiful country but also help share some supplies for the school children in the communities where we were visiting. Even the lodge we stayed at in the Amazon jungle had been picked because it supports a local clinic and school and our dollars would be going to a greater cause. We had been hesitant to travel during this time and all precautions were taking by our group taking temperatures, O2 Sat levels and quick symptoms questionnaire. The people and staff of everywhere we visited were always masked and very conscious no to spread the virus with a diligence I wish we had here in the USA! We were overwhelmed by the gratitude of the people for coming and helping to revive their economy since they had suffered such immense financial and health loss with minimal to no governmental support for the poor of the country. Oxygen had even run out for the hospitals. Most of the vendors I interacted with had lost family members to the virus due to lack of medical support. Knowing that I am vaccinated and feeling well the entire trip and able to help bring hope of a economical stimulation for these people was just one of the incredible benefits of traveling with this group that prioritizes people over profits.
