Review for Northwest Family Services, Portland, OR, USA
As a Family Resource Coordinator with Northwest Family Services I have had the privilege of supporting students and families at the Oregon City Service Learning Academy. This past year has been exceptionally difficult for many families. Students and their families have had to adapt to life during a pandemic, navigate school closures, and most are struggling with financial insecurities. Finding resources during these times have been critical for the student’s success academically, as well as for their overall well-being. Below is just one example of a family that I have been providing ongoing support to during these difficult times.
I first met this family during a socially distanced home visit with the school counselor. The school was concerned due to the students lack of engagement during remote learning. During the home visit, we had learned that the student and their family were struggling financially and needed assistance accessing community resources. After the home visit, I helped the family by locating and accessing local food pantries, job resources, and new clothing for the student donated by Bloomin’ Boutique. The student started coming to school during the last few weeks of in-person learning. Teachers reported that she was engaging with peers, engaged in class, and doing well academically. Just recently the student had been selected to join a competitive dance team. The mother reached out to me for resources and, together, we were able to apply for a sports fee scholarship that awarded the student $300. It was incredible to hear how excited the student was to be able to participate in dance with their friends.
My support for this family is ongoing as we navigate resources for rent and utilities as well as support during the upcoming school year. I am so grateful to be able to see the positive impacts that community resources have on our students and families.
