Review for Maasai Girls Rescue Center, SCOTTSDALE, AZ, USA

Rating: 5 stars

I run a Charitable Foundation and have been exposed to dozens and dozens of charitable organizations over the last 40 years. All of them have good intentions and do good work. But some are much more impactful than others and some are much more efficient than others. It is rare to run across a group that does both extremely well. First, MGRC takes in the most vulnerable people in the world - girls growing up in extreme poverty in Sub-Sahara Africa. They are often little more than property in their societies. These girls are ignored even by other charities, as their condition is so hopeless. MGRC houses them, feeds them, pays for the medical care they usually need, educates them and loves them. The goal is to raise them to be educated and independent young women, who can confidently contribute to their tribe and wider communities. Second, MGRC does all this using a very light business model - the founder does not take a salary, and most or all of the overhead is donated or paid for by others; all of the money that is donated by a girl's sponsor goes to her care.
Two years ago, my wife and I joined a guided group and hiked to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro. It was the trip of a lifetime. But even more impactful was a 3 day visit to the MGRC facility where we met the girls and their caretakers, and enjoyed learning about their lives and answering their questions about ours. What a difference! We felt we made deep connections with these happy, hopeful girls and that by donating a very small amount of the total cost of our trip, we know we are making an impact that will spread and last a long time.
