Review for PITTSBURGH PUBLIC THEATER CORPORATION, Pittsburgh, PA, USA
In my opinion, Pittsburgh Public Theater has the broadest repertory, and highest general degree of excellence across that repertory, of any performing arts organization in the Western Pennsylvania region. Pittsburgh is fortunate to have an extremely active arts scene, and The Public for the 35 years of their existence, has very much been an important anchor for the performing arts in our city. There are not too many companies capable of doing the classics, musicals, cutting-edge new plays, American plays of historical importance, etc. and doing them all well; many productions are indeed exemplary.
I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...
As mentioned above, I have been attending The Public's plays for a good 20 years, originally in their first home on Pittsburgh's north side, and since about 2000 in the new O'Reilly Theater that was specially built for the company downtown.
If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...
I would really like to see a second theater space added, so that there would be room for experimental plays, play readings, more arts-education activities for the young population, etc. Most theater companies of this strength and importance have at least an adjacent "black box" space for these types of activities.
