Review for The Trevor Project, Inc., West Hollywood, CA, USA

Rating: 5 stars

I first became aware of the The Trevor Project several years ago, because I wanted to go to a pool party. What I learned there changed my view of social responsibility. From my experience as a gay kid who grew up in a highly intolerant environment, I understood the tough issues that LGBTQ youth face at a very young age--and that the consequences are sometimes, and needlessly, tragic. The Trevor Project provides lifesaving services to the under-served and at-risk LGBTQ youth population. I have watched the organization grow over the last several years, and am proud to serve on its board.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

the number of calls has increased dramatically to the Trevor Project's accredited helpline. I've seen that helpline, staffed entirely by volunteers, literally save lives. And I've seen the letters from parents who thank us for our work.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

be so humbled by the graciousness and dedication of the staff, donors, and volunteers.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

the knowledge that my service literally saves lives. As one of our founders says: The Trevor Project provides an alternative ending to a story that is otherwise unimaginable.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

so dedicated! I'm so proud of this board and am continually amazed at the dynamism, cooperation, unity, and dedication expressed by each member of this organization--especially the volunteers, who are the heart of the organization and its efforts.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

extend its reach to the youth who need it most, by increasing visibility and becoming the primary resource for LGBTQ youth through our services, coordinated research, and advocacy.

Ways to make it better...

we could let our donors and volunteers know how much we care about their contributions. As the organization grows, my biggest challenge is making sure that our donors and volunteers know how crucial their efforts are to The Trevor Project's success.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

the demand for our services is increasing a rate that challenges our infrastructure. The biggest challenge facing The Trevor Project is the need for what we do, and the increasing visibility as we reach more at-risk youth.

One thing I'd also say is that...

I appreciate anyone who's reading this now, especially if you aren't familiar with the Trevor Project. Thank you!!

When was your last experience with this nonprofit?

2009

Role:  Board Member & I learned the value of reaching out to LGBTQ youth in crisis, and how a life can be saved with a phone call.
