Review for Global Volunteers, St. Paul, MN, USA
I have participated in two Global Volunteers programs, the first on the Blackfeet Reservation in Montana for a week, during their annual PowWow. It was a test to see how organized and worthwhile their programs are. Mainly I worked in meal programs and visiting a skilled nursing facility on the reservation, though there were other options. I loved the whole experience, the staff, the other volunteers, and the community people and programs we worked with and learned from. I really liked the philosophy of Global Volunteers: the community decides on the projects and determines where we are most needed. After this initial and very positive experience, a year later I decided to venture out further, the second time to Crete for two weeks. Again, I had a fabulous experience, being part of a different community that appreciates the work that we do, this time working in local English Language Schools with 10 to 15-year-olds. Terrific kids who need to be proficient in English to get good jobs and go to University. They were thrilled to be able to talk with native speakers and prepare for their exams. I learned a lot about life on Crete, its culture and importance in world history, its art and too much about the food and wine. Again, a wonderful and life-changing experience in a well-planned and well-organized program of service and discovery. Loved the staff and other volunteers and the chance to meet locals who were inspiring, gracious and very appreciative of our work. I hope to return again after the COVID-19 pandemic is over.
