I traveled to Kenya wit CTC and had a wonderful time. CTC really helps balance the experience between volunteering and learning the culture. While we worked directly with the people of Maai Mahiu, we also visited their homes and learned about the way they live on a day to day basis. I always felt safe and welcomed everywhere I went. The programs there in the village are pretty amazing and everyone that works for CTC on the ground in Kenya was very appreciative of us being there to help. I did not feel unsafe, it was just the opposite, the people loved seeing us especially the children. Rooms/lodging: The rooms are standard: two queen beds, mosquito nets, a sink, toilet, and shower. For Africa the accommodations are very nice. The work: Is very fulfilling. Depending on the team you join, you could be working at the office and or helping outside in the village in one of the gardens. The food: Is pretty much the same thing every day, but I cannot complain: Chapati (bread), Kale, potatoes, beans, and for breakfast eggs and toast (with coffee and or tea). I brought granola bars and peanut butter to keep in my room. Safari-Because you are working when you are there, the safari is a great break. It's about a 4 hour drive (the things you see on the way to safari are straight out of National Geographic Channel-AMAZING!). The accommodations at the safari and pretty luxurious and you spend hours watching exotic animals in their natural habitat. It’s so incredible… All in all my experience was fantastic. I highly recommend traveling to Kenya with CTC in order to gain a new educated perspective on how the culture functions. It’s hard to put into words how life changing this trip was for me, and I most definitely plan on going back.
