These guys put boots on the ground to get stuff done that's really needed. In my case, I helped them build a latrine at a high school in Jericho. This kind of thing is mundane, but vital, easy to overlook in our high tech environment.

I've been working with Kiva and affiliate organizations, and they get the job done, helping build small business and create jobs. (I figure creating a job is one of the best things a person can do for another.) Specifically, I've made contributions including the West Bank and Detroit, that helps people out, and my loans are getting paid off quite well.

People want to help others, and that often means getting involved somehow with nonprofits. We want to find effective ones, and avoid the questionable ones.
It helps to find user reviews of nonprofits.
This review is self referential, in part, to get the word out better. GreatNonprofits does a really useful and good job, and more people need to hear about it.

Maybe it's not necessary to talk up the folks behind Wikipedia, people already know their importance and influence.
You might not know how hard they work to get it done right, including always trying to make it more accurate and how to prevent attacks and other problems.
In a sense, they're asking "what is truth" in conditions which can get real unfriendly at times.

These guys serve a very broad population that really needs a break, and they get the job done.
They're also expanding in areas that need help, like people who can't get out of the house easily, and who lack local friends and family.
I've recently participated in a brainstorming session with them, on the use of tech to help people who're isolated. It was impressive and serious, and will get more done.

IAVA has been very effective in a number of areas, like getting better Federal legislation for vets, improving awareness and support for vets problems, and mutual support systems for vets.
This also includes real big areas like jobs for vets, which is perhaps the highest priority matter for veterans, and their spouses. They're arguably the most important support groups for recent vets.

Review for Free Press, Florence, MA, USA
The folks at Free Press believe that there's still a place for community-based journalism and that's the work they are pushing forward every day.
Okay, you hear me talking "trust is the new black" and that power and influence will shift dramatically to the people and groups with the best reputations and largest networks. The power and influence landscape in 2020 will look very different from now.
I feel this applies to media, and that the media landscape at that point will reflect those flows of power and influence. Among news organizations, the successful survivors will be the ones that build a culture of trust, largely by checking facts, and not tolerating disinformation.

The folks at Craigslist Foundation are doing good work. It's a nonprofit that works to strengthen communities and neighborhoods.
I think we all need to work together to make things better for everyone: treat people like you want to be treated; and now and then, give the other person a break, like being your brother’s or sister’s keeper. That means finding ways to do it.
We’re a collaborative species, relying on each other to survive, and everyone needs to pitch in, now and then. CLF and their programs can help you do this.
