My Nonprofit Reviews
Review for Hands Across the Sea, Inc., Boston, MA, USA
I was fortunate enough to find Hands Across the Sea via an article in the Searchlight online paper. Upon contact through the Hands website, I was connected with Mrs. Hanna Knecht, who in turn connected me with Mrs. Yevette Pompey and Mrs. Enna Bullock in St. Vincent. We met at the public library and they graciously invited me and my son to help deliver books to several of the local school libraries. This was such a great way to learn about the country and local communities. Of course, the kids were very excited to get new reading materials.
I was also able to help setup and attend a Teacher Resource Guide Workshop. It was encouraging to see many of the teachers get excited about new ways to involve the kids with reading.
One other way that I have been able to help is with small physical repairs in the school libraries, things like shelves and chairs. This has been very fun and I typically get to have some of the kids involved. They are very curious about the tools, where I am from, and whether I read. Of course I love to read and I encourage them to check out books to take home and read.
As I have traveled through the island of St. Vincent, I always ask the kids I meet if they use the library in their school. Almost without exception, they excitedly tell me yes. Most of them can even name either Mrs. Pompey or Mrs. Bullock by name.
This is a great program that I hope to continue assisting.
