Review for Highlands School Inc, Bel Air, MD, USA

Rating: 5 stars

My son was struggling with school although I knew he was quite bright. He also was struggling socially. I heard that a new school would be opening to help children with learning disabilities/differences. We met with the folks and both were impressed. He became a member of the first class, staying only one year there and has gone on to do very well academically and socially. I now am so pleased to have the opportunity to serve on the Board of Directors as every aspect of the operation of the school is geared to maximize the learning and well being of the students. Classes are small (3:1 student/teacher ratio in the small academic classes). There are sessions that help with social development, an impressive gym and theater. We were able to build a new school building and the design/layout is so impressive: the business and administrative activities take place in the front of the building - nearest the street. Small classrooms maximize interaction, "smart" board enable the students to pay attention to the work in the classroom without having to struggle to take notes. Perhaps most impressive is the wide variety of "learning" situations using every sense, and all manner of activities to assure that the students can find the best way for them to learn. Rarely does a student stay more than 2 or 3 years - it is the goal to teach the skills so students can return to "main stream" education, usually having improved by 2 -4 grade levels! These students are of average to above-average intelligence who might well get lost in traditional schools, and often have come to believe that they are stupid because they do not learn in the traditional ways. The Highlands School helps these children meet their potential, which in turn enables them to be more productive and positive members of society.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

As mentioned in my comments, my personal experience with The Highlands School has been through my son - watching him grow to love learning. Also, I am proud to take part as a Director and in many of the activities undertaken by the school.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

The only change I would make would be to generate sufficient funding so we can reach the many other students who will benefit by this approach to learning.

Role:  Board Member & I have served on the School's Foundation Board and now on the Board of Directors. I also am the proud mother of a child who was a member of the first class of The Highlands School.
