My Nonprofit Reviews
Review for Global Volunteers, St. Paul, MN, USA
I have participated in three Global Volunteer programs in two different countries. In 2013 and 2019, I went to Ecuador, where I helped in FUNDAC, a preschool in Calderon, a suburb of Quito. This involved a variety of activities such as copying work sheets by hand, (no copiers were available) washing little hands, feeding the children, helping them brush their teeth and, at the end of the school day, helping the adults with their studies to learn English.
In 2017, I joined a group of 16 other volunteers in middle/high school in the Monteverde area of Costa Rica. Here we worked with the students on many projects to improve the school grounds. A big part of this project was to speak with and help the students improve their knowledge of the English language.
While it may appear that we were in these countries only to provide them with various forms of assistance, we actually gained much ourselves in that we learned much about their different cultures, and the challenges they face. In Ecuador, it was a joy to see the children's little smiling faces every morning and in Costa Rica it was fun to work outside with the older children while chatting with them as they tried out their English. All three programs were different but equally memorable.
