I started volunteering 3 years ago at Peninsula Humane Society and deeply appreciate the opportunity to grow in my dog handling skills and help PHS make a difference alongside the competent and dedicated staff.
The benefits of social bonding with dogs and cats is a positive influence on human health, especially for vulnerable populations, such as kids, the elderly and inmates. PHS contributes the welfare of society, not just the non-human animals in our care.
I would like to see more creative programs, such as more descriptive narratives of pets that are ready for adoption, organized days/weekends out with volunteers for dogs and more frequent play group interaction among the dogs, as I have seen done at other shelters, but I recognize that these initiatives add operational complexity and that resources are limited.
