Review for The Rivanna Conservation Society Inc, Charlottesville , VA, USA

Rating: 5 stars

Since 1990, RCS has organized river and creek clean-ups, river floats, riparian forest buffer plantings, and a range of water quality monitoring activities. RCS provides high quality environmental education programs and resources for schools, public officials, and other community and civic groups. Since 2005, RCS's ability to support full-time staff has greatly increased the group's presence in local schools and its ability to influence local governments on a day-to day basis in support of improved local environmental and watershed management policies and ordinances. RCS was a founding member of the multi-organization Rivanna-wide StreamWatch water monitoring initiative and remains active in the StreamWatch effort to obtain and publicize high-quality long-term data for environmental conditions and trends in the Rivanna watershed.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

Markedly less litter in local streams after years of clean-up activities. Local governments are better educated on and responsive to environmental concerns and know that RCS and other local groups will hold them to a high standard for their decisions.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Expand the membership and active voulunteer base. Reduce our current reliance on intermittent and increasingly scarce grant funding. Develop a local base of major donors capable of supporting a high level of quality of RCS activities over the long term.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

The opportunity to meet and interact with people from many different walks of life as we produce tangible improvements in local environmental conditions.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

Diverse, interesting, multi-talented, and highly committed.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Work with local landowners to restore forest buffers along all major rivers and streams in the watershed, provide all local schools with high quality hands-on environmental education programs, donate eight million bucks to food banks and other good works.

Ways to make it better...

More people were involved.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

The shrinking pool of financial resources available to non-profits and public environmental agencies at all levels. Current deep divisions within the local environmental community regarding water supply strategies and technical details.

One thing I'd also say is that...

RCS is a fine group of people working to fill a need which we can expect to be constant and ongoing so long as human beings dwell in the Rivanna watershed and seek to keep natural systems intact for their own sake and for the many benefits they give to us

When was your last experience with this nonprofit?

Role:  Board Member & I've been active in a wide range of RCS activities since 1993.
