Review for The Spirit of Harmony Foundation, Chicago, IL, USA

Rating: 5 stars

Being in lockdown during the pandemic, I have had a lot of time to start practicing the clarinet again. There was also plenty of time to clean my closets! So I decided to upgrade from my old instrument to a new one. The old clarinet was still perfectly good, but I decided to treat myself. I contacted the Spirit of Harmony and honestly thought they would tell me that they wouldn't be able to help me donate it to kids in need, because programs weren't operating during COVID. But they not only connected me with a wonderful kids' music program in my own neighborhood, but they made the e-introduction. They were very helpful, and not only was I able to find a great new home for my clarinet, but I discovered a fantastic program in my own community that I can support! The Spirit of Harmony Foundation does excellent and important work connecting people and supporting music programs.

I was speaking with some neighbors who were very concerned about filling the days of their kids during the COVID-19 school and activity closures. As a long-time Todd fan, I checked in on the website of Todd's Spirit of Harmony Foundation to see whether they offered any ideas for making sure kids have music education during this time. I found an incredibly helpful resource page (https://spiritofharmony.org/program-spotlight/) that I was able to share with my friends.

Between the website and their social media posts, the Spirit of Harmony seems to always be at the forefront of music education advocacy. They keep things positive and practical, always thinking of ways to make sure music is part of kids' lives.

I've been a fan of Todd Rundgren for decades, and recently discovered his music education advocacy foundation. They had an information table set up in the lobby at a Todd concert I was attending. It was so impressive to see such fun and enthusiastic volunteers, and they even had a display spotlighting a local music program!

As anyone who loves Todd's music would expect from his own foundation, the Spirit of Harmony is unique. I appreciate the fact that they don't focus on themselves, but focus on mobilizing people to get involved with supporting music programs for kids in their own communities.

Their name comes from the lyrics of one of my favorite Utopia songs, Singring and the Glass Guitar. "... Now in possession of all four keys, the brave adventurers march triumphantly into the valley of silence to open the chest, smash the glass guitar, and free the spirit of Harmony." Cool!
