I have been a volunteer for 23 years, watching PHS improve and grow as the years go by. As challenging as staffing is in the Bay Area, PHS works very hard to hire and retain excellent and motivated employees who go to great lengths to help the animals and the adopters. This is a very difficult job, dealing with a variety of stressful medical, social, and behavioral (both animals and humans !) problems. The staff is invariably professional and competent in complex and uncertain situations. The animals get excellent care with complete daily cleanings and observations. The veterinary care is meticulous and caring, for hundreds of animals, some in very dire conditions. I wouldn't have stayed for 23 years if I didn't think the organization was worth it!
