Review for Humanity For Children, Columbia, MO, USA
I am Jules Gahamanyi, Executive Director of ARAMA, a social justice and human rights organisation based in Rwanda. I have known Humanity for Children (HFC) and the different projects they have been funding in Rwanda for the last 10 years. HFC has been hosted by ARAMA for the past two years as both organisations strive to change the lives of individuals, of families, and of villages.
Since 2007, HFC has worked in Ngoma District on other projects in different areas including access to education and healthcare. HFC has worked with partners to build two health facilities and, in Gashanda, to facilitate children educational advancement through a solar study light project (The Bright Light Campaign).
In all of these projects, HFC holds “listening sessions” with the village groups that ensure that they understand HFC’s mission and values, and how HFC projects are developed and sustained. These “listening sessions” have led to creative income-generating and educational advancement projects.
One such “listening session” led to the support of the Kazo Futbol Club – a mechanism to keep children, particularly boys, in school. For the past two years, HFC has brought university Futbol players from the United States to hold skill-building “clinics” for a number of villages in Ngoma District.
HFC has also facilitated partnerships between U.S. schools and Rwanda schools, and between U.S. churches and Rwanda churches.
HFC use a rights-based approach and a bottom up approach, participatory approaches which put the rights of the citizens on the center of the livelihoods.
