Review for FIRST, Manchester, NH, USA

Rating: 5 stars

I started as a high school student in FIRST learning from Engineering mentors about concepts that were not touched in school. The experience helped me shape my motivations for an engineering degree and specifically a focus on Robotics. Now I spend my free time mentoring and teaching high school students in FIRST. The passion and dedication of volunteers in the organization keeps my excitement high every year I've been involved.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

I keep very involved by email and mentoring activities once a week. During January I spend almost every day volunteering as a mentor to 30 high school kids.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

I would try to make robotics and science projects more affordable to student all around the world.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

My time mentoring and participating at competitions with students

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

Amazing full of excitement and extremely motivated.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Expand FIRST to more students across the country and help change America's perceptions of science and technology.

Ways to make it better...

The cost was significantly reduced so more students can participate.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

Recruiting more lead mentors and highly experienced Robotics teachers. Cost of the entry to schools and serious teacher commitment is also severe drawback year to year.

One thing I'd also say is that...

FIRST is a fantastic organization for high school but a bit too expensive. They need to find ways to reduce cost.

How frequently have you been involved with the organization?

About every week
