Review for Outreach International, Kansas City, MO, USA

Rating: 5 stars

I have been associated with Outreach International, over most of its 40 year history...as a board member, a congregational representative, a donor, and as a site visit participant. I support and appreciate this organization, because they do not just help the poor around the world...they teach the poor how to be involved in changing their own life situations for the better. They promote what they call "participatory human development." And this "PHD" leads to sustainable change and wonderful outcomes for the people who are involved. Outreach changes lives! Having been on site visits in both the Philippines and Malawi, I have seen for myself the poor living conditions of so many people around the world...small huts with dirt floors, no clean drinking water, few crops or animals for food, no means of livelihood. BUT, then, with the help of Outreach facilitators (who befriend and work with the poor where they live), the people learn to think through their situations and problem solve and prioritize...and, then begin to implement new ways to improve their living situations: their homes, their food and water, means for livelihood...and their lives change forever. The people have learned how to improve their lives...so the change becomes sustainable into the future!! Outreach International is truly a GREAT nonprofit!!

I have been involved with Outreach International, since their early years back in the early 1970s, as a board member, a donor, a volunteer - and I can say with great enthusiasm that they have gotten better and better at what they do over the years! They are committed to helping the poorest of the poor (now in 10 countries around the world) learn how to help themselves...by prioritizing their main needs and finding ways to meet those needs (from sources of livelihood, to clean drinking water, to schooling for their kids, to improved shelter/housing). Outreach International is more than a community development organization – it is an organization of hope for many people!
