Review for Howard County Autism Society Inc, Columbia, MD, USA
To me, the Howard County Autism Society often feels like a home away from home. I don't live in Howard County, but my young adult son with ASD lives in Columbia. And so, from time to time I have attended meetings of other parents with young adult children, meetings about housing options, meetings about employment and transition issues, and smaller groups such as the Asperger parents group, and one of the young adult volunteer outings. So even for a relative stranger, I have always felt welcome.
And while HCAS is clearly a group that works because individuals with autism and their families choose to be involved, there is no question that the Board of Directors and Executive Director Melissa Rosenberg set the tone in many ways. Melissa makes it her business to reach out to the members, their families and the community at large. She is creative and seeks new ways to solve problems. She follows up on suggestions and looks for ways to implement them.
I know that HCAS is a great community and a wonderful resource for families with young children on the spectrum. But as any parent of an adult with autism knows, when your child leaves the school system, he or she is often on his/her own. Moreover, Mom and Dad's roles as advocates become more difficult and far less effective. HCAS goes a long way toward closing that gap and being there for families of all ages.
